Removing and installing/replacing oil sump on rear axle differential (220M)
To prevent the final drive oil from foaming over, make sure that no remnants of the liquid sealing compound are pressed into the rear axle differential housing.
Use only the approved differential oil: BMW rear differential fluid MSP/A , BMW part number 83 22 2 365 988
Failure to comply with this instruction will result in serious damage to the rear axle differential.
Necessary preliminary work:
- Drain FINAL DRIVE OIL .
- Remove REAR AXLE FINAL DRIVE .
Removal:
Release screws (1).
Remove the front holder (adapter) (2).
Release screws along the dotted line (1).
Remove oil sump (2).
Installation:
Replacing oil sump:
Release temperature sensor (1) and screw in into new oil sump.
Tightening torque 33 11 4AZ .
Clean sealing surface (1) on oil sump and rear axle differential.
If necessary, remove remnants of liquid sealing compound with scraper.
Part : Liquid seal.
Apply the liquid seal on the sealing surface (1) of the oil sump.
Installation note:
The liquid sealing compound can be obtained via the applicable BMW parts catalogue.
Align the oil sump on the rear axle differential.
Tighten the screws along the dotted line (1).
Tightening torque 33 11 1AZ .
Align the front holder (adapter) (2) on the rear axle differential.
Part : Replace screws (1).
Tighten down screws (1).
Tightening torque 33 17 1AZ .
Required follow-up work:
- Install the REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL .
- Add FINAL DRIVE OIL .
