Replacing front left or right coil spring (M4 GTS)

Installation note: 

1. All screws, nuts, bolts and hose clamps removed during the repair must be replaced.
2. Retaining elements on chassis and suspension and steering parts must be replaced.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Remove FRONT SPRING STRUT .

Removal: 

Drill out the screw in the locking ring (1) using a drill (2).

Attention! 

Risk of damage through the spring strut. Drill to a max. of 5 mm deep.

Push the locking ring (1) downwards.

Remove C-clips (2).

Release set screw (2) in spring cup (1).

Screw the spring cup (1) so far downwards that the coil spring is fully relaxed.

Remove protective cap (1).

Attention! 

Danger of injury! This operation may only be carried out when the coil spring is fully relaxed.

Loosen nut with socket SW22 (1) (available in the tool kit), reversible ratchet with extension (2) and socket SW10.

Impact screwdrivers are prohibited

Risk of damage inside the shock absorber!

Remove support bearing (3) and coil spring (1) from spring strut.

Installation: 

Remove spring pad (3).

Unscrew spring cup (2) from spring strut.

Replace locking ring (1).

Screw on spring cup (2) again.

Fit a new spring pad (3).

Mount a new spring (1) and support bearing (3) on spring strut.

Part  : Replace nut.

New nut with socket SW22 (1) (available in the tool kit), reversible ratchet with extension (2), tighten socket SW10 and torque wrench with ring spanner.

Tightening torque 31 31 3AZ .

Risk of damage inside the shock absorber! 

Basic setting of the spring strut:

Align the upper and lower end of spring to the spring pad.

By turning the lower spring cup, set the dimension (A) between the lower edge of the spring cup and the lower edge of the spring strut.

Dimension (A) = 255 mm.

Install protective cap (1).

Required follow-up work: 

• Install FRONT SPRING STRUT .
• Carry out the CHASSIS BASIC SETTING FOR THE ROAD SETUP .
• Check HEADLIGHT ADJUSTMENT , correct if necessary.
