All the safety precautions and instructions contained in the Owner's Handbook must be strictly observed!
Failure to observe these safety precautions and instructions increases the risk of serious physical injury, damage to your health and damage to property and equipment!
- Use only the BMW approved special tool!
- Prior to each use, check the special tools for defects, modifications and operational reliability.
- Damaged/modified special tools must not be used!
- No changes or modifications may be made to the special tools!
- These special tools are intended solely for the purpose of tightening and relieving cylindrical and tapered suspension springs.
- Keep special tools dry, clean and (down to the spindle) free from grease.
- Impact screwdrivers are prohibited!
Risk of damage inside the shock absorber!
- Do not compress coil spring to full extent.
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove FRONT SPRING STRUT .
Removal:
Slacken nut (1).
Take off holder (2).
Pull out screw (3).
Expand swivel bearing with special tool 31 2 230 and pull off spring strut.
Before application: Check protective insert for wear, replace if necessary.
Use of faulty protective inserts leads to coil spring damage. This can lead to coil spring breakage (corrosion).
You must use pressure plate 2 213 039 with protective insert 2 213 040.
Clamp special tool 31 3 341 in vice.
Fit special tool 2 213 039 and 2 240 482 onto special tool 31 3 341 until retaining bolt (1) can be felt and heard to snap into place.
Insert centering ring 2 364 828 into the fixing plate 2 240 482.
Check seat of special tools 2 213 039 and 2 240 482 with centering ring 83 30 2 364 828. Adjust as required.
Installation of brake onto mounting plate:
Place counter support 2 240 486 in the correct position/bore hole:
- Screw connection using bore holes 7 and 15
Turn centering ring 2 364 828 until counter-holder 2 240 486 can be screwed into the required position.
Screw the counter support with the mounting plate and the centering ring with the screws (1) hand-tight!
Clean coil spring to remove contamination.
Spring must be free of grease, clean and dry.
Insert spring strut into spring tensioner.
The support bearing must be completely fitted against the centering ring 2 364 828.
The lower spring coil must be placed completely into the recess of special tool 2 213 039!
Before application: Check protective insert for wear, replace if necessary.
Use of faulty protective inserts leads to coil spring damage. This can lead to coil spring breakage (corrosion).
You must use pressure plate 2 240 487 with protective insert 2 412 607.
Fix pressure plate 2 240 487 with screws 2 240 490!
The gummed side of the pressure plate 2 240 487 must be fitted against the top spring coil.
Position the spring strut so that the end of the spring (1) at the pressure plate 2 240 487 protrudes by 25 mm.
Tighten the screws 2 240 490 evenly at 8 Nm.
When the end of the spring begins to twist relative to the pressure plate, tensioning must be stopped immediately.
The pressure plate must be checked for correct seating and the rubber-coated facing and pressure plate also checked for wear.
Tension the coil spring with the spring tensioner 31 3 341 until the stress on the piston rod is relieved.
Release the nut with special tool 2 360 213, the reversible ratchet with the extension and socket SW10.
Remove the spring strut with auxiliary damper.
Installation:
Parts : Auxiliary damper
Mount new auxiliary damper (1).
Remove the spring pad (1) and mount onto the new spring strut, replace if necessary.
The plastic tab (2) must be positioned in the bore hole (3) in the spring cup.
Insert spring strut into tensioned coil spring.
Check the installation position of the protective tube, correct the fold if necessary.
Parts : Nut
Tighten the new nut with special tool 2 360 213, the reversible ratchet with the extension, the socket SW10 and the torque wrench with the ring spanner insert SW21.
Tightening torque 31 31 3AZ .
Relieve tension on coil spring.
Impact screwdrivers are prohibited!
Risk of damage inside the shock absorber!
Installation note:
Keep swivel bearing and spring strut in lower area clean and free from oil and grease.
Special tool 2 359 147 may only be removed after the screw connection is applied!
Expand the swivel bearing with special tool 31 2 230, align based on gap to bridge (1) on rear side of spring strut and push upwards.
Using special tool 2 359 147 and a torque wrench with ring spanner insert, pull the swivel bearing to the limit position (tightening torque 22 Nm).
Remove special tools 31 2 230.
Position holder (2).
Parts : Screw (3) and nut (1)
Insert the new screw (3).
- Screw head must point in direction of travel.
Tighten new nut (1).
Tightening torque 31 31 4AZ .
Remove special tool 2 359 147.
Required follow-up work:
- Install FRONT SPRING STRUT .
- Carry out wheel alignment procedure. Refer to CARRY OUT KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH VEHICLE LOAD UP TO DESIGN POSITION or KINEMATICS DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM WHEEL ALIGNMENT WITH RIDE HEIGHT MEASUREMENT WITHOUT LOADING THE VEHICLE .
