Replace the front left or right spring strut (M4 GTS)

Special tools required: 

• 31 2 230

Necessary preliminary work: 

• Remove FRONT SPRING STRUT .

Removal: 

Unscrew nuts (1).

Remove screws (2).

Take off holder (3).

Spread the swivel bearing with the 2 special tools 31 2 230 and pull the swivel bearing off the spring strut.

Drill out the screw in the locking ring (1) using a drill (2).

Push the locking ring (1) downwards.

Remove C-clips (2).

Release set screw (2) in spring cup (1).

Screw the spring cup (1) so far downwards that the coil spring is fully relaxed.

Remove protective cap (1).

Attention! 

Danger of injury! This operation may only be carried out when the coil spring is fully relaxed.

Loosen nut with socket SW22 (1) (available in the tool kit), reversible ratchet with extension (2) and socket SW10.

Remove the support bearing (3), auxiliary spring (2) and coil spring (1) from the spring strut.

Installation: 

Mount the bottom spring pad, spring (1), auxiliary damper (2), top spring pad and support bearing (3) on the new spring strut.

Part  : Replace nut.

New nut with socket SW22 (1) (available in the tool kit), reversible ratchet with extension (2), tighten socket SW10 and torque wrench with ring spanner.

Tightening torque 31 31 3AZ .

The use of impact screwdrivers is prohibited

Risk of damage inside the shock absorber 

Basic setting of the spring strut:

Align the upper and lower end of spring to the spring pad.

By turning the lower spring cup, set the dimension (A) between the lower edge of the spring cup and the lower edge of the spring strut.

Dimension (A) = 255 mm.

Installation note: 

Keep press fit of swivel bearing and spring strut in lower area clean and free from oil and grease.

Align swivel bearing (2) and spring strut (1) to each other using the mark (3).

Slide swivel bearing (2) on the spring strut until the limit position is reached.

Position holder (3).

Part  : Replace screws (2) and nuts (1).

Insert screws (2).

• Screw head must point in the direction of travel

Tighten down nuts (1).

Tightening torque 31 31 4AZ .

Required follow-up work: 

• Install the FRONT SPRING STRUT .
• Perform CHASSIS BASIC SETTING OF STREET SET-UP .
