Removing and installing or replacing alternator (S55 engine)

WARNING: Risk of burning!

Only perform this repair work on an engine that has cooled down.

Necessary preliminary work: 

NOTE: In order to remove the alternator, it is necessary to remove the AIR-CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR for the air conditioning system.

In so doing:

REMOVE A/C COMPRESSOR FROM BRACKET .

Removal: 

Release screw (1).

Release coolant expansion tank (2) and lay to one side.

Loosen screws (1) by a few turns until holder of air conditioning compressor (2) is loose.

Do not remove holder of air conditioning compressor (2).

Unlock connector (1) and remove.

Remove protective cap and release nut (2) underneath.

Disconnect positive battery cable (2) from alternator (3).

Release screws (1).

Release screw (2) and remove alternator.

Installation: 

Install alternator and tighten screws (1).

Tighten screw (2).

Tightening torque 12 31 1AZ .

Connect and lock the connector (1).

Connector (1) must snap audibly into place.

Install positive battery cable on alternator (3).

Tighten nut (2) and install protective cap.

Tightening torque 12 42 1AZ .

Tighten screws (1) of air conditioning compressor holder (2).

Tightening torque 12 31 2AZ .

Insert coolant expansion tank (2) into rubber mounts and tighten screw (1).

Tightening torque 17 10 5AZ .
