Removing and installing/replacing cowl panel seal (M4 Convertible)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

• Remove FRONT DOOR SILL COVER STRIP (INNER) .

Depending on the version, the contact point is located between the cowl panel (1) and edge protection (2) sealing in area (A) or (B).

Only the version with the contact point in area (B) is available as a replacement part.

If a conversion is to be made from the previous version to the new version, the EDGE PROTECTION  (1) on the left and right must also be replaced.

Removal: 

Pull back tab (1) and release screw (2) underneath.

Pull off edge protection (1) up to A-pillar node (2).

Pull off sealing (1) from the trim strip (2).

Release screws (1).

Carefully feed the trim strip (1) out of the sealing (2) and remove.

Pull off the A-pillar node (1) towards the rear and loosen the seal upwards from the window frame.

Replacement only: If necessary, remove existing adhesive tape on the edges.

Remove residual butyl from the vehicle.

For reuse of the sealing remove residual butyl from the sealing.

Shape lumps out of butyl remnants.

Press down butyl lumps (1) and pull off.

Repeat procedure until all residual butyl has been removed.

Clean painted surfaces with adhesive remover.

Installation:

Prepare butyl rope (1) with approx. 100 mm length and 5 mm diameter.

To do this, pull the butyl rope with 7 mm diameter until a diameter of 5 mm is achieved.

Affix the butyl rope (1) to the aluminium profile strip (2), starting with a 10 mm overlap.

Affix butyl rope in area (3) centrally in the radius (4).

Affix butyl rope in area (1) in a straight extension ascending from radius (2).

Affix butyl rope (1) in a straight extension up to the metal clamp (2).

Maintain a distance of approx. 5 mm up to the metal clamp (2).

If necessary, cut off the butyl rope.

Mount trim strip (1) and tighten screws (2).

Tightening torque 51 23 1AZ .

Installation note: 

Butyl rope (3) must be crimped from the trim strip.

To facilitate installation, moisten gasket (1) with water.

Insert sealing (1) into the groove on the trim strip (2).

Do not pull on the end of the sealing (1).

Position the A-pillar node (1).

Feed the sealing (2) into the groove (3).

Do not strike the A-pillar node with your hand.

Insert sealing (1) in the aluminium profile strip.

Manually press onto sealing (1) in area (2) and crimp butyl rope.

Fold down tab (1) and tighten screw beneath (2).

Tightening torque 51 23 2AZ .

Coat sealing (1) with water and press into the trim strip (2).

Secure edge protection (3).

Position the end of the edge protection (1) of the cowl panel sealing correctly.

Required reworking:

• Install FRONT DOOR SILL COVER STRIP (INNER) .
• Check side window glass setting on left and right, and adjust if necessary. Refer to ADJUSTING REAR LEFT OR RIGHT SIDE WINDOW .
• Replacement: Build date up to 11/2014:

  Following successful installation, it must be ensured that the vehicle is programmed to integration level F020-14-11-500 or higher.
