11 31 005 Checking camshaft timing (B48B)

Special tools required: 

• 11 6 480 
• 2 365 488 
• 2 288 380 
• 2 358 122 

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Remove CYLINDER HEAD COVER 
• Remove SPARK PLUGS
• Remove FRONT UNDERBODY PROTECTION
• Remove ACOUSTIC COVER AT FRONT 

Additionally for vehicles with automatic transmission: 

Remove STARTER MOTOR

Release cover (1) from the vibration damper with a screwdriver.

Crank engine with special tool 11 6 480  to TDC firing position of cylinder no. 1.

Vehicles with automatic transmission: 

Position special tool 2 365 488  and fasten with bolts.

Use special tool 2 288 380  to block the crankshaft in the TDC firing position Cylinder 1

Vehicles with manual gearbox: 

Remove protective cap (1) on oil sump.

Crank engine at central bolt with special tool 11 6 480 

Use special tool 2 288 380  to block the crankshaft in the TDC firing position Cylinder 1

NOTES FOR CHECKING AND ADJUSTING THE TIMING  in vehicles with manual gearbox absolutely must be followed!

The markings (1) on the intake and exhaust camshafts can be read from above.

The cam on the exhaust camshaft (A) on the first cylinder points obliquely inwards to the right.

Secure basic carrier (1) by screws (2) on cylinder head.

Position gauge (3) with recess on mounting flats of exhaust camshaft.

Secure basic carrier (3) by screws (5) on basic carrier.

Position gauge (4) with recess on mounting flats of intake camshaft.

Secure gauge (4) by screws (5) on basic carrier.

If necessary, adjust valve timing.

Required follow-up work: 

• Remove all special tools
• Install SPARK PLUGS
• Install CYLINDER HEAD COVER 
• Install FRONT UNDERBODY PROTECTION
• Install ACOUSTIC COVER AT FRONT 

Additionally for vehicles with automatic transmission: 

• Install STARTER MOTOR
