12 41 020 Removing and installing/replacing starter motor (B48)

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Disconnect the BATTERY EARTH LEAD .
• Remove reinforcement plate. (all-wheel drive vehicle) 
• Remove the ACOUSTIC COVER of oil sump (only loosen). 

Loosen the screws along the arrows.

Remove connecting rod (1).

Loosen nut (1), remove positive battery cable (2) and place to one side.

Loosen nut (3), remove clamp (4) and place to one side.

Loosen screws (1).

Remove starter motor (2).

Installation: 

Install starter motor (2).

Tighten down screws (1).

Tightening torque, refer to: 12 41 1AZ

Connect positive battery cable to starter motor.

Bring anti-twist safeguard (1) of the positive battery cable on the starter motor to limit position (2).

Tighten nut (3).

Tightening torque, refer to: 12 42 2AZ

Connect clamp (5) to starter motor.

Tighten nut (4).

Tightening torque, refer to: 12 42 3AZ

Install connecting rod (1).

Tighten screws along arrows.

Tightening torque, refer to: 12 41 2AZ

Required follow-up work: 

• Install the ACOUSTIC COVER oil sump.
• Install reinforcement plate. (all-wheel drive vehicle) 
• Connect the BATTERY EARTH LEAD .

Only during starter replacement and on vehicles with MSA (automatic engine start-stop function): 

• Reset start counter using BMW diagnosis system.
