51 31 200 Removing and installing/replacing rear window

Attention! 

The following notes form the basis for these repair instructions and must be adhered to at all times:

When reusing the rear window: 

Avoid damaging lines for heated rear window/-aerial.

NOTE: Removal is carried out with SPIDER .

The following new parts/CONSUMABLES  are required (sourcing reference BMW Parts Department).

Material Quantity
Rear window (with replacement) 1
Spacer buffer 5x5x20 mm 6
Dual Lock/Velcro fastener on rear window 4
Dual Lock/Velcro fastener on tailgate 4
Small repair kit 1

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

Release screws (1).

Disconnect plug connections (2) and secure cable to rear window with adhesive tape.

Attention! 

Risk of damage! 

Tape off body in area of piercing point with fabric adhesive tape.

Slide string out of SPIDER  at line (1) through the adhesive bead.

Cut out rear window.

Installation of spacer buffers/Dual Locks (spacers): 

Attention! 

Spacer buffers and Dual Locks are installed to avoid rear window breakage.

Completely remove damaged spacer buffers (1) and dual locks (2).

Bond new spacer buffer (1) and dual locks (2) to marks on rear window.

Overview of rear window bonding:

a  [mm] = Position adhesive bead centrally to tolerance band
b  [mm] = Width adhesive bead 7 ±1
h  [mm] = Height adhesive bead 12 ±1

Apply bead joint in area (A).

A tolerance band is printed on the ceramic (two dashed lines) that marks the position of the adhesive bead. Place the adhesive bead centrally on the tolerance band.

Aerial structure of rear window must not come into contact with adhesive.

Installation note: 

Carefully working on rear window with siphon:

A (distance between rear window and tailgate) 2.5 ±1 mm
B (short length) 2 ±1 mm
