51 24 350 Removing and installing/replacing left spindle drive (automatic tailgate activation)
Support rear lid in fully opened position with suitable apparatus.
- Rattling when opening and closing
- Drive not functioning
- Drive is blocked or sluggish
- No longer closes or opens
Or if incorrect operation is suspected:
- Rear lid was closed with excessive exertion of force
- Bent, broken piston rod
- Broken ball head
The compression spring must be secured against unintentional sudden release.
Electric spindle drive for rear lid is under mechanical spring bias!
The component must be secured against falling down.
Attention!
Risk of damage to spindle drive!
If spindle drive has been electrically disabled (e.g. connector unplugged) the tailgate must only be moved slowly by hand.
These repair instructions are based on the DISASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION OF BALL SOCKETS WITH CLAMP .
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Determine and note down OPENING HEIGHT OF AUTOMATIC LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT LID ACTUATION
Set tailgate to the max. opening angle. The spindle drive may only be removed or installed when the tailgate is open to the maximum.
- Remove PANEL FOR ROOF PILLAR AT REAR (D-PILLAR)
- Remove SHOULDER ON LEFT IN LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT
Removal:
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Thread rubber grommet (1) outwards with wiring harness.
Unclip ball sockets (1) and remove spindle drive (2).
Installation:
Install spindle drive (2) and engage ball sockets (1).
Thread rubber grommet (1) in with wiring harness.
Install rubber grommet (1) correctly to prevent water ingress.
Connect plug connection (1).
Required follow-up work:
Initialize automatic operation of tailgate using the service function in the diagnosis system.

Check the opening angle setting of the tailgate and restore the customer setting if necessary.
