11 65 020 Removing and installing/replacing exhaust turbocharger (M57T2)

WARNING: Risk of burning!
Only perform this repair work on an engine that has cooled down.
NOTE: Troubleshooting on exhaust turbocharger.

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

IMPORTANT: In event of exhaust turbocharger damage:
  • Pressure pipes
  • Charge air cooler
  • Intake plenum

must be checked for foreign bodies, damage and operation.

Release banjo bolt (1).

Installation note: 

Tightening torque: 11 42 2AZ .

Replace sealing rings.

NOTE: Catch escaping engine oil in a suitable container.

Disconnect plug connection (2).

Release clamp (3).

Installation note: 

Replace clamp.

Tightening torque: 11 65 1AZ .

Clean sealing surfaces.

Release screw (1) from oil return line.

Remove oil return line.

Tightening torque: 11 42 3AZ .

Release screw (1).

Release bolt (2) and remove exhaust turbocharger (3).

Installation note: 

Replace gasket between exhaust turbocharger and exhaust manifold.

If necessary, replace exhaust turbocharger.

Modify oil return passage.

Release oil line banjo bolt (1).

Installation note: 

Tightening torque: 11 42 2AZ .

Replace sealing rings.

Oil line (2) must run parallel to housing.

Assemble engine.

IMPORTANT: To avoid damaging the threads and prevent exhaust turbocharger leakage, insert mounting bolts in 1/2 turns simultaneously.
