Replacing the sports steering wheel (X2 2018-2023)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2023 BMW X2, 2022 BMW X2, 2021 BMW X2, 2020 BMW X2, and 2019 BMW X2. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

NOTE: Wheel alignment is not necessary after the steering wheel has been removed and installed or replaced.

Necessary preliminary work:

Refer to REMOVING AIRBAG UNIT .

Removal:

CAUTION: While releasing the screw (1), counter support the steering wheel with the help of a second person in order to reduce the torque on the steering column!

Move wheels/sport steering wheel into straight-ahead position.

Disconnect plug connection.

Release screw (1) and remove sport steering wheel.

Assembly sequence:

If necessary, remount both shift paddles
Remount the DESIGN COVER .

Remount both switches on the sports steering wheel
Refer to If necessary, remount the engine ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF THE LANE DEPARTURE WARNING .
If necessary, remount the steering wheel heating control unit

Installation:

NOTE: There are clock springs installed without a mechanical anti-twist lock.
Clock spring without mechanical anti-twist lock:
(recognizable at the inspection glass for the mark of the neutral position)

Do not twist the clock spring
Check the neutral position of the coil spring at the steering column switch cluster (SZL).
Neutral position is correct only when the green or yellow mark (1) is clearly visible

Align sport steering wheel by way of marking (1) to steering column marking (2) and attach.

Connect the plug connection.

Installation note:

Only on vehicles with microencapsulated screw (1): Clean thread in the steering column and replace screw (1)!

Tighten the screw (1)!

Tightening torque 32 33 1AZ .

Make sure connecting lines are correctly routed.
