26 11 000 Removing and installing output shaft (front inserted) completely
Special tools required:
- 2 407 851
- 33 5 070
- 33 0 080
- 23 5 070
- 00 9 120
- 00 9 130
Attention!
The recessed nut on the transfer box must be replaced!
To prevent hardening during installation, the recessed nut absolutely must be screwed within 10 min. in one work step.
After the propeller shaft has been screwed into the transfer box (inlay nut), a minimum hardening time of 2 hours must be complied with.
The hardening time may be extended at lower temperatures!
Failure to comply with these instructions may cause serious damage!
Attention!
For vehicles with automatic transmission, the parking lock must be released. Otherwise the propeller shaft does not rotate and the parking lock could be damaged.
A gear must not be engaged for vehicles with manual gearbox.
Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove the FRONT RIGHT WHEEL .
- Remove the COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM.
- Remove the UNDERBODY PROTECTION (FRONT) and REAR ENGINE UNDERCOVER
- Unlock the parking lock.
Removal:
Install propeller shaft anti-kink protection 2 407 851 between front and rear propeller shafts.
Attention!
The arrows on the propeller shafts anti-kink protection must point in the direction of travel towards the front during installation.
Attention!
To avoid buzzing sound after refitting the propeller shaft:
- The flexible disc connection (1) on the rear at the propeller shaft must be marked in one plane with the flexible disc (2) and the three-bolt flange (3) before removal.
- During installation the three-bolt flange (3) must be forced back together again with the flexible disc (2) in the same installation position.
- Replace ZNS screws.
Release screws (1).
To protect the joints, the propeller shaft must necessarily be supported by a jack.
Loosen screws.
Push the propeller shaft towards the front and remove from the rear axle differential.
Attention!
The bi-hexagonal flange nut (1) must not be used for counter-hold.
Failure to comply with this instruction may result in serious damage to the transfer box.
Hold recessed nut (2) on transfer box with special tools 33 5 070 and 33 0 080.
Attention!
The recessed nut on the transfer box is opened by turning the front propeller shaft in the direction of travel counterclockwise, see direction of arrow.
If an attempt is made to open the recessed nut in clockwise direction, the recessed nut will be automatically screwed in further and the insert collar of the 12-edge flange nut will be severely damaged.
If the insert collar of the flange nut was damaged, the propeller shaft can no longer be secured using a new recessed nut and the transfer box must be replaced.
Loosen recessed nut by turning the propeller shaft in an counterclockwise direction with special tools 33 5 070 and 33 0 080.
Remove retaining clip (1) and gasket (2).
Remove insert nut (1).
Installation:
Installation note:
Check centering (1).
If necessary, replace damaged CENTERING MOUNT.
Before installing propeller shaft:
Clean insert collar (1) on flange nut and gearing on bevel pinion (2) of all residues and degrease!
Top up insert collar (1) with grease.
Refer to: PROPELLER SHAFT - OPERATING FLUIDS
Clean thread (1) of joint hub to remove adhesive residues.
Clean hub gearing (2) and taper (3) and apply a light coating of grease.
Attention!
Thread (1) of joint hub must not be fouled with grease!
Parts: Replace gasket, sunk nut (1) and retaining clip (2).
Place flange nut (1) with gasket in insert collar of flange nut.
Mount retaining clip (2).
Attention!
Observe installation and screw fastening sequence without fail.
Installation sequence:
- Join propeller shaft to transfer box
- Join propeller shaft to rear axle final drive
Screw-fastening sequence:
- Recessed nut on transfer box
- Flexible disc to rear axle final drive
- Center mount to body
Mount propeller shaft on transfer box.
Screw recessed nut (1) min. 2 thread turns onto propeller shaft (2) by hand.
Attention!
The bi-hexagonal flange nut (1) must not be used for counter-hold.
Failure to comply with this instruction may result in serious damage to the transfer box.
Hold recessed nut (2) on transfer box with special tools 33 5 070 and 33 0 080.
Attention!
The bi-hexagonal flange nut must not be used for bracing.
Failure to comply with this instruction may result in serious damage to the transfer box.
Screw the front propeller shaft in the direction of travel in a clockwise direction, see direction of arrow, using special tools 23 5 070 and 33 0 080 with recessed nut.
The sunk nut must be screwed into place within 5 minutes.
Tightening torque, refer to: 26 11 1AZ.
Attention!
To avoid buzzing sound after refitting the propeller shaft:
- During installation the three-bolt flange (3) must be forced back together again with the flexible disc (2) on the marked plane.
Parts : Replace ZNS screws.
Install propeller shaft and slide towards rear.
Insert new screws and tighten.
Tighten mounting bolts of flexible disc.
Tightening torque, refer to: 26 11 2AZ .
Secure angle of rotation special tool 00 9 120 with magnets 00 9 130 to vehicle underbody and screw down further according to angle of rotation.
Install center mount.
Logs (1) must point downwards at installation.
Insert screws and tighten.
Tightening torque, refer to: 26 11 4AZ .
Remove propeller shafts anti-kink protection 2 407 851 .
Required follow-up work:
- Install UNDERBODY PROTECTION (FRONT) and REAR ENGINE UNDERCOVER .
- Install the COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM.
- Install the FRONT RIGHT WHEEL .
