51 31 200 Removing and installing/replacing rear window
Special tools required:
- GENERAL PROCEDURE for dismantling/installation of affixed window glass
When reusing the rear window:
Avoid damaging lines for heated rear window/-aerial.
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- REMOVE PANEL FOR ROOF PILLAR at rear left/right
- Remove AUXILIARY BRAKE LIGHT
- Partially lower HEADLINING AT REAR
Detach ribbon cable (1) at auxiliary brake light.
Disconnect plug connection for heated rear window (2).
Secure cable to rear window with adhesive tape.
Tape off edges of tailgate and body all round with fabric adhesive tape (e.g. Tesa).
- Rear window
- Adhesive bead
- Body opening
- Fabric adhesive tape
Push wire starter from ROLL OUT 2000 at line (1) through adhesive bead.
Only replace:
Have U-shape knife with 36 mm and 45 mm (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department) ready on tool.
Fit respective knife with required blade length:
36 mm At top and side of rear window
45 mm Lower area of the rear window
Regrind blade with a grinding stone while machine is running (new blades also).
Carefully insert knife between body aperture and rear window.
Guide web of knife parallel to rear window.
Cut through adhesive bead as closely as possible to rear window.
Lift out rear window with suction lifter.
Pull off adhesive tapes all round.
Overview of rear window bonding:
If reusing the previous rear window, remove adhesive residue down to 0.5 mm.
Primer is applied along the TPE spray coating (5).
Installation note:
Open rear lid approx. 30 cm and secure with suitable object.
Carefully working on rear window with suction lifter:
- Insert first at bottom
- Align sides evenly
- Center rear window to distances (A) and (B)
- secure in this position with yellow plastic adhesive tapes
- 5.7±1 mm
- 5.7±1 mm
Preload on top of windscreen to prevent wind noise:
Graphic logically applies to rear window Rear window (1) must be lower than roof outer skin (2). This is the only way to prevent wind noises.
Position special tool 51 0 010 in center of vehicle depending on dimension (A) and check underprotrusion of rear window (1).
A = 3.3±1 mm
X = Measurement stages 1... 4 mm
