11 00 050 Removing and installing engine (N55)

Special tools required: 

• 11 0 000
• 11 7 310
• 11 8 680
• 13 5 281
• 13 5 282

Necessary preliminary tasks: 

• Disconnect NEGATIVE BATTERY LEAD .
• Move engine compartment lid into SERVICE POSITION .
• Remove CATALYTIC CONVERTER .
• Remove TRANSMISSION .
• Remove front OUTPUT SHAFTS (AWD only).
• Drain ENGINE OIL .
• Remove INTAKE SILENCER HOUSING .
• Remove MANIFOLD .
• Remove FAN COWL with electric fan.
• Remove RADIATOR .
• Remove COOLANT THERMOSTAT .
• Remove TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER .
• Detach all coolant hoses from engine.
• Remove bulkhead SOUND INSULATION .
• Detach vacuum line from brake booster.
• Unfasten engine wiring harness and lay to one side. See WIRING HARNESS SECTION FOR IGNITION AND INJECTORS and WIRING HARNESS SECTION FOR ENGINE .

To remove or install the engine, the towing hook 72 15 8 108 670 is required.

Support engine with special tool 11 7 310 on steering box.

Evacuate Air conditioning.

Release screws (1) of A/C lines and disconnect.

Do not remove air conditioning compressor.

Detach right pressure pipe (1) from charge air cooler.

Remove circlip (1).

Unlock and disconnect fuel lines (2 and 3).

Close off fuel line (3) with special tool 13 5 281.

Close off fuel line (2) with special tool 13 5 282.

Disconnect plug connection (1) on carrier plate.

Disconnect plug connection (2) on carrier plate.

Disconnect plug connection (3) on carrier plate.

Release positive battery terminal (4) on carrier plate.

Tightening torque: 12 90 7AZ .

Disconnect plug connection (5) on carrier plate.

Release screw (1) on carrier plate.

Tightening torque: 12 90 6AZ .

Lift carrier plate upward to remove.

Release power steering pump (1) and set down on front axle support.

Shown without air conditioning compressor for purposes of clarity.

Installation of special tool 11 8 680 on rear lifting eye (transmission side).

Position special tool 11 8 680 in the lifting eye with the lock pin (1).

Pull ball lock pin (1) toward the rear until both balls (2) are pushed outward.

Installation note: 

For checking the correct installation of the special tool 11 8 680.

There must be a 6.5 mm gap between ball lock pin (1) and ball lock pin housing.

The gap dimension can be checked using a 6.5 mm drill.

Attach special tool 11 0 000 to engine crane.

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from the designated mounting eyelets of special tool 11 8 680 only (see arrow).

Release vacuum line (1) of engine mount.

Release screws (1) on engine mount on left and right.

Screw towing eye into cylinder head.

Tightening torque 11 12 5AZ .

Suspend special tool 11 0 000 from the designated mounting eyelets (1) only.

Lift engine out with engine crane.

Assemble engine.

Check function of DME.
