32 31 090 Removing and installing/replacing steering column

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove STEERING WHEEL
Remove steering column shrouds. See REPLACING LOWER SECTION OF STEERING COLUMN TRIM and REPLACING UPPER SECTION OF STEERING COLUMN TRIM .
Remove TRIM PANEL FOR PEDAL MECHANISM
Release STEERING SHAFT from steering column (in engine compartment)
Disconnect plug connection on electric steering column lock
Remove wiring harnesses on steering column

Secure steering column against falling out.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 32 31 3AZ .

Remove steering column rearwards.

Installation note:

Check steering column sleeve.

Replacement:

Modify STEERING-COLUMN SWITCH CLUSTER

After installation:

Replacement: Lock and unlock electrical steering column lock and delete fault memory in Car Access System (CAS).
Replacement: Turn steering wheel in both directions to the limit position. The airbag indicator light must not light up in the process.
