Removing and installing transfer case

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2006 BMW X3, 2005 BMW X3, and 2004 BMW X3. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
IMPORTANT: After replacement, the "Repair" service function must be carried out with GT1 using appropriate scan tool.
IMPORTANT: After completing work, check gear OIL LEVEL  and top up if necessary.

Filler plug (1):

Tightening torque: 33 Nm.

Gear oil level up to filler edge of filler plug (1).

Use only the approved GEAR OIL .

Remove COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM . Remove heat shield.

Release screws. Remove FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT at output flange of transfer case and tie to one side. See Fig 1.

Remove propeller shaft from transmission. Release center bearing. Tie propeller shaft to one side. These tasks are described in REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF PROPELLER SHAFT .

Support transmission with special tools. See Fig 2.

Release screws and remove transmission crossmember. See Fig 3.

Detach plugs (1) and (2) from servomotor. See Fig 4.

Release screw connection of transfer case. Remove transfer case. During installation, pay attention to dowel pin (1). Grease dowel pin (1). See Fig 5. Apply a thin coat of grease (Weicon anti-seize) to splines.
