Removal and installation
On four-wheel drive vehicles with defective, non-engaging drive, it is imperative that the following information is taken account of:
If the vehicle has been moved under engine power with a non-engaging drive system (e.g. front propeller shaft defective and no longer engaging with the front differential or 1 output shaft no longer engaging with drive flange), it is imperative that the transfer box is calibrated after repairing the propeller shaft/output shaft(s).
After completing repairs, perform calibration using BMW diagnosis and information system and selecting Control unit function > Function check > Transfer box.
- Remove COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM . Remove heat shield.
- Release ring nut (1) in several turns. Installation note: Tighten ring nut using appropriate wrench. Tightening torque: 26 11 3AZ
.
IMPORTANT: To avoid buzzing sound after refitting the propeller shaft:
- The flexible disc connection (1) on the front at the propeller shaft must be marked in one plane with the flexible disc (2) and the three-bolt flange (3) before removal.
- During installation the three-bolt flange (3) must be forced back together again with the flexible disc (2) in the same position.
- Replace ZNS bolts and self-locking nuts.
- Release screws. Replace ZNS bolts and self-locking nuts. Tightening torque: 26 11 1AZ .
- Release screws. Replace ZNS bolts. Tightening torque: 26 11 4AZ .
- Push rear propeller shaft (1) forwards.
- Grip propeller shaft and release nuts. Tightening torque: 26 11 6AZ
. Bend propeller shaft downwards at center mount (1). Detach propeller shaft from transmission output flange and remove downwards.
Installation note:
Check centering; if necessary, replace damaged centering.
