After completion of work, check transmission oil level. See 00 11 500 CHECKING/TOPPING UP FLUID LEVEL IN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (GA6HP26Z/6HP32Z)
Use only the approved transmission fluid.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission!
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Disconnect battery See 12 00 ... INSTRUCTIONS FOR DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING BATTERY
- Remove heater bulkhead (except M57). See 51 71 085 REMOVING AND INSTALLING CENTER OF ASSEMBLY COMPARTMENT BULKHEAD
- Hold engine in transmission removal position.
- N73/M57: Position transmission lifter underneath.
- All others: with special tool 00 0 200 See 11 00 670 SECURING ENGINE IN INSTALLATION POSITION (N73)
- Remove exhaust system
. See 18 00 020 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM (N73)
- M57: after catalytic converter
- All others: complete
- Remove oxygen monitor sensors (except M57). See 11 78 540 REPLACING LEFT LAMBDA OXYGEN MONITOR SENSOR (N73) and 11 78 543 REPLACING RIGHT LAMBDA OXYGEN MONITOR SENSOR (N73)
- Remove front engine underguard
- Remove reinforcement plate
See 31 10 010 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REINFORCEMENT PLATE
Installation:
Important notes on installation are described in this work step.
Release screws and remove transmission underbody protection (1).
Remove heat shields (1) and (2).
Only M57:
Release screws and remove underbody protection (1).
Unfasten nut.
Remove cable (1).
Installation:
Adjust cable
- Release nut
- Adjust cable by means of holder (2)
- Spacing A = 1 mm
M67 only:
- Release screws.
- Remove holder.
Release screw (1).
Pull hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler out of transmission housing.
N73 only: Release holder for oil lines on engine.
Installation:
Replace sealing rings.
BMW ALPINA B7 only
Pay attention to thermostat (2) when removing hydraulic lines (1)
Crank engine at central bolt in direction of rotation until a torque converter retaining screw is visible in opening.
Release retaining screws with special tool 24 1 110. See 24 1 110 SOCKET WITH MAGNET
Crank engine further and release remaining 3 bolts.
Tightening torque 24 40 1AZ. See 24 40 TORQUE CONVERTER
Unlock plug (1) and disconnect (except M57).
Unclip cable holder (1) from transmission housing (except M57).
Unclip cable from transmission.
Perform following tasks:
- Unlock and disconnect plug (1) by turning.
- Insert special tool 24 2 390 in sealing sleeve. See 24 2 390 COVERING CAP
The operations are described in Replacing mechatronics (Important: Read and comply with important note!). See 24 34 ... NOTES ON MECHATRONICS (GA6HP26Z/GA6HP32Z/GA6HP19Z)
Supporting transmission:
Support with special tools 24 5 306, 24 5 301 and 00 2 030. See 00 2 030 UNIVERSAL HYDRO-LIFTER BASIC UNIT
Set up special tool 24 5 306:
- All supports to "B".
- Supports 3 and 4 are at rear of transmission.
- Support lettering points forwards.
Securing torque converter against slipping out:
Install special tool 24 4 131 (basic unit) with corresponding blades in opening of transmission housing and clamp:
Blades for
- M54, N62 24 4 132
Blades for
- M67, M67TU 24 4 132 turned 180° screwed
Prepare special tool 24 4 161 (1) with corresponding shaped sections:
Shaped section for
- 2 N73 24 4 162
- 3 M57TU, M57T2 24 4 163
Insert special tool 24 4 160 into opening of transmission housing and clamp gently with screw (1). See 24 4 160 SUPPORT BRACKET
Twist in screw (2) and clamp down.
Then tighten down screw (1) briefly.
Further tasks:
Remove transmission cross-member.
Tightening torque 24 71 1AZ/2AZ. See 24 71 TRANSMISSION MOUNTS
N73 only:
Release holder so that lines of power steering (1) do not collide with line from transmission oil cooler (2).
Remove propeller shaft: See 26 11 000 REMOVING AND INSTALLING COMPLETE PROPELLER SHAFT
- Remove propeller shaft from transmission.
- Release center bearing.
- Tie propeller shaft to one side.
If necessary, unlock or lock transmission lock. See 24 34 ... MANUALLY UNLOCKING TRANSMISSION LOCK
