33 32 131 Removing And Installing/Replacing A Steering Knuckle/Wheel Carrier

IMPORTANT: Observe safety when raising the vehicle.

Activate parking brake.

Remove rear wheel.

Deactivate air spring system. . See 37 00 100 DRAINING/FILLING AIR SPRING SYSTEM .

Unscrew collar nut.

Deactivate parking brake.

Installation:

Replace collar nut, apply a light coating of oil to contact surface and tighten down.

Tightening torque 33 41 1AZ . See REAR AXLE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Secure collar nut by peening on flat areas of output shaft.

Remove rear brake disc . See 34 21 320 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OR REPLACING BOTH REAR BRAKE DISCS .

Disengage Bowden cable for parking brake at brake shoe expander . See 34 41 135 REMOVING AND INSTALLING OR REPLACING BOTH BOWDEN CABLES FOR PARKING BRAKE .

Replacement only: Drive out drive flange for rear axle shaft . See 33 41 000 REPLACING DRIVE FLANGE ON LEFT/RIGHT REAR AXLE SHAFT .

Remove pulse generator . See 34 52 535 REPLACING A REAR PULSE GENERATOR .

Remove stabilizer link from swinging arm . See 33 55 040 REPLACING STABILIZER LINK FOR REAR LEFT OR RIGHT STABILIZER .

Remove spring strut/air spring strut from wheel carrier . See 33 52 100 REMOVING AND INSTALLING REAR LEFT OR RIGHT SPRING STRUT SHOCK ABSORBER or 37 12 070 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING REAR LEFT OR RIGHT AIR SPRING STRUT .

Remove integral link . See 33 32 051 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT PUSH ROD/INTEGRAL LINK .

Press output shaft out of drive flange . See 33 21 ... PRESSING OUTPUT SHAFT OUT OF DRIVE FLANGE AND DRAWING IN (OUTPUT SHAFT REMOVED FROM REAR DIFFERENTIAL) .

Remove guide arm from wheel carrier . See 33 32 091 REPLACING A GUIDE ARM .

Remove control arm from wheel carrier and remove wheel carrier. See 33 32 071 REPLACING ONE UPPER CONTROL ARM .

Replacement:

Modify brake carrier/brake guard plate . See 34 21 171 REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING A BRAKE CARRIER/BRAKE GUARD AT REAR .
Install new wheel bearing . See 33 41 151 REPLACING LEFT OR RIGHT WHEEL BEARING ON REAR AXLE SHAFT .
Modify or replace drive flange . See 33 41 000 REPLACING DRIVE FLANGE ON LEFT/RIGHT REAR AXLE SHAFT .

After installation:

Version with ride-height control: activate air spring system . See 37 00 100 DRAINING/FILLING AIR SPRING SYSTEM .
Adjusting parking brake . See 34 41 006 ADJUSTING PARKING BRAKE .
Perform chassis alignment check . See 32 00 ... CHASSIS/WHEEL ALIGNMENT CHECK PROCEDURE .
