Adjustable Steering Column And Steering Column Tube, 100 And S4

NOTE:

Automatic seat belt tensioning cable routing. .

The adjustable steering column is maintenance free. It is supplied as a replacement part with a highly tensioned spring for tilt adjustment of the steering column. Except for replacing and adjusting the cable, no other repairs are possible.

If a steering column is removed and reinstalled in the same or another vehicle, installation sleeve, Part No. 4A0 419 913, is to be used for the installation.

  1. Locking bolt
    • Always replace
  2. Steering pinion
    • Install universal joint to stop and install clamping bolt
  3. Bolt
  4. Washer
  5. Bracket
    • Equipped with slots so that steering column tube can be adjusted slightly up or down if necessary
  6. Washer
  7. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • 35 Nm (26 ft lb)
  8. Torx® screw
    • 7 Nm (62 in lb)
    • Remove and install with standard commercial Torx® -T30- insert, Snap-On FTX30A or equivalent
  9. Steering lock housing
    • Install in steering column tube and fasten
  10. Bolts
    • Marked with sealing paint, must not be turned
  11. Combination nut/washer assembly
    • 5 Nm (44 in lb)
  12. Clamp
    • Fastens wiring harness to steering column
    • During installation, make sure wiring harness does not get pinched in threaded connection
  13. Wiring harness
    • For right steering column switch
    • With Ground wire
  14. Steering column with steering column tube
    • Removing and installing ADJUSTABLE STEERING COLUMN AND STEERING COLUMN TUBE 
    • Upper and lower part are of injection-molded plastic; do not hammer on steering column
    • Avoid temperatures over 100°C (212°F); connection between upper and lower parts can loosen
    • Can be adjusted up or down slightly in slots on bracket
      WARNING:
      • Upper and lower parts of steering column tube are assembled and sealed with a dot of red paint.
      • If this color dot has been sheared off, always replace the steering column tube.
  15. Left steering column wiring harness
  16. Installation sleeve
    • Can be obtained as replacement part No. 4A0 419 913
    • Must be installed before reinstalling steering column
    • Remove only after installation of steering column
  17. Cable for length adjustment
  18. Tensioning cable
    • Not applicable for A/Canada
      WARNING:

      If upper and lower parts of steering column tube are misaligned, or if the color dot (sealing paint) is sheared off, replace the steering column tube.

  19. Spacer bushing
    • Press into Teflon® bushing
  20. Teflon® bushing
    • Install with collar pointing to steering wheel
  21. Rubber bushings
    • Install in steering column
  22. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
  23. Bolt
    NOTE:

    Hex bolt can also be installed on the steering column side and fastened with the self-locking nut.

    • Always replace
    • 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
