Adjustable Steering Column And Steering Column Tube Overview, A6, From My 95

NOTE:

The adjustable steering column is maintenance free. It is supplied as a replacement part with a highly tensioned spring for tilt adjustment of the steering column. Except for replacing and adjusting the cable, no other repairs are possible.

If a steering column is removed and reinstalled in the same or another vehicle, installation sleeve, Part No. 4A0 419 913, is to be used for the installation.

  1. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
  2. Washer
  3. Bolt
  4. Bolt
  5. Washer
  6. Bracket
  7. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • 30 Nm (22 ft lb)
  8. Torx bolt
    • 7 Nm (62 in lb)
    • Remove and install with standard commercial Torx insert such as Snap-On FTX30A or equivalent
  9. Steering lock housing
    • Install in steering column tube and fasten
  10. Nut/washer
    • 5 Nm (44 in lb)
  11. Wiring harness, right column switch
    • Also fasten Ground cable
  12. Clip
    • For fastening wiring harness to steering column
    • When installing, ensure wiring is not crimped at screw
  13. Steering column with column tube
    • Removing and installing ADJUSTABLE STEERING COLUMN AND STEERING COLUMN TUBE 
    • Upper and lower part are of coated plastic; do not hammer on steering column
    • Avoid temperatures over 100°C (212°F) - the connection between top and bottom halves can loosen
    • Can be adjusted up or down slightly in slots on bracket
      WARNING:
      • Upper and lower parts of steering column tube are assembled and sealed with a dot of red paint.
      • If this color dot has been sheared off, always replace the steering column tube.

  15. Cable for fore/aft adjustment
  16. Assembly sleeve
    • Part No. 4AO 419 913 A
    • If steering column is removed, always use when re-installing
    • Do not remove until steering column is installed
