Engine, Removing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Procedure 

-- Before starting the procedure, determine the curb weight position. Refer to WHEEL BEARING, LIFTING TO CURB WEIGHT POSITION, VEHICLES WITH COIL SPRING .

-- Position the front wheels so they are straight.

-- Switch off the ignition.

-- Disconnect the ground cable from the battery terminal. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the lock carrier cover. Refer to LOCK CARRIER COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the front wheels. Refer to WHEEL, CHANGING .

-- Remove the left and right front wheel housing liner and the wheel spoiler. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the front lower longitudinal member. Refer to Lock Carrier ; Lower Longitudinal Member, Removing and installing.

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .

-- Drain the coolant. Refer to COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING .

-- Place the container of the : VAS5014  or the : VAS6208  underneath.

-- Release and disconnect the connector -1- from the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor on Radiator Outlet -G83-.

-- Lift the clamp -3-.

-- Remove the right coolant hose at the bottom of the radiator and drain the rest of the coolant.

-- Place the : VAS5014  or : VAS6208  on the right side of the transmission area and under the subframe.

-- Lift the clamp -arrow-. Remove the coolant hose to the ATF cooler on the right rear side.

-- Hold the coolant hose downward and allow the coolant to drain.

-- Loosen the hose clamps -1 and 3-, and remove the air duct hose -2- from the air duct pipe.

-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Disconnect the fuel line -2-. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, DISCONNECTING .

-- Loosen the hose clamp -1- and disconnect the hose for the EVAP system.

-- Seal the open lines and connections with clean plugs from the : VAS6122  .

-- Release the latch in direction of -arrow- and open the E-box -1-.

-- Remove the nut -arrow- and free up the wire.

-- Free up the wire -1- on the wiring duct.

-- Remove the bolt -2- and free up the ground wire.

-- Remove the bolt -3- and nut -4- and free up the wiring duct.

-- Lift the clamp -1- and remove the coolant hose.

-- Equipment versions without parking heater: open the retainer in direction of -arrow- and push the Coolant Recirculation Pump -V50- to the side.

NOTE:

Ignore -2-.

-- Loosen the hose clamp -1- and remove the air duct pipe and tie up to the left side.

-- Lift the clamp -1-, remove and free up the coolant connection from the radiator.

-- Lift the clip -2- and remove the upper left coolant hose from the radiator.

-- Release the catch in direction of -arrow- and remove the vacuum hose -1- at the same time do not damage it.

-- Release, disconnect and free up the connectors -1- on the Engine/Motor Control Module -J623-.

-- Remove the connector -2- from the bracket and disconnect them and then free up the wires.

-- Remove the connector -3- from the bracket, disconnect it, and free up the wire.

-- Loosen the nut -arrow- several turns, and free up and disconnect the connector -2-.

-- Remove the nut -1- and free up the ground wires.

-- Remove the nut -arrow- and free up the ground wires.

-- Disconnect the left and right connector -arrow- for the electrohydraulic engine mount solenoid valve.

-- Free up the wires.

-- Release and disconnect the left and right connector -2- for the Right Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G45- /Left Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor -G47-.

-- Free up the wire.

NOTE:

Ignore -1-.

-- If installed, release and disconnect the left and right connector -arrow- for the Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78- / Right Front Level Control System Sensor -G289-.

-- Free up the wire.

-- Remove the brake caliper and secure it with the brake hose still attached inside the wheel housing with wire. Refer to BRAKE CALIPER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Loosen the threaded connection -1-.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the wheel bearing housing by deforming it.

- Do not widen the slots in the wheel bearing housing.

-- Remove the joint pins in the upper control arm -2- from the wheel bearing housing.

-- Repeat the procedure on the other side of the vehicle.

-- Remove the left and right nut -4-.

NOTE:

The bolt -3- will be removed later.

Ignore -1 and 2-.

-- Remove the stabilizer bar. Refer to STABILIZER BAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the left and right bolts -arrows- for the subframe shield.

-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and push together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying a used ribbed belt by reversing the running direction.

- Mark the running direction before removal.

- Pay attention to the running direction when reinstalling.

-- Turn the tensioner clockwise in direction of -arrow- using the : T40087  to release the tension on the ribbed belt.

-- Remove the ribbed belt and lock the tensioner using the : T40098  .

-- Release and disconnect the connector -1-.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the refrigerant lines and hoses by removing and pivoting the A/C compressor.

- Do not stretch, bend or kink the refrigerant lines and hoses.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-. Then remove the A/C compressor from the bracket and tie it up on the left side.

-- Release and disconnect the connector -2- for the Transmission Fluid Cooling Valve -N509- -3-.

-- Free up the wire.

NOTE:

Ignore -1 and arrows-.

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying due to electrostatic discharge.

- Do not touch the connector terminals by hand.

- Touch a ground (for example the hoist) and discharge the static electricity.

-- Remove the front muffler. Refer to FRONT MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise in direction of -arrow- and disconnect the connector -1- from the transmission.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and free up the parking lock emergency release cable -1-.

If the Engine Should Be Separated from the Transmission:

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and push the ATF cooler with the hoses -1, 2 and 4- attached.

NOTE:

Ignore -3-.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission in direction of -arrow-.

-- Counterhold the crankshaft and loosen the torque converter bolts using the : T40058  and an offset open-end wrench.

NOTE:

Only turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Remove the six bolts -arrow- for the torque converter on the drive plate -1-. Turn the crankshaft an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Equip the : VAS6131B  with : VAS6131/10  and : VAS6131/13  as follows:

-- Secure the mounting elements by hand on the : VAS6131B  .

-- Position the : VAS6131B  so it is level.

-- Guide the : VAS6131B  under the engine/transmission assembly.

-- Attach mounting elements from the : VAS6131/10  and : VAS6131/13  at the left and right of the control arm, as shown.

-- Make sure the threaded spindles are completely screwed in.

-- Attach the mounting elements from the : VAS6131/10  to the mounting element on the left and right front as shown.

-- Install the internal multi-point bolt -arrow- for the subframe crossbrace all the way into the subframe on the left and right sides.

-- Attach the mounting elements from the : VAS6131/10  to the internal multi-point bolts for the subframe crossbrace on the left and right sides as shown.

-- Attach the mounting elements from the : VAS6131/10  to the tunnel crossmember on the left and right sides as shown.

-- Rotate all of the mounting element spindles upward until all the mounting pins come in contact with the mounting points.

-- Fasten the mounting element base plates to 20 Nm on the : VAS6131B  .

-- Secure the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- on the tunnel crossmember.

-- Remove the left and right bolts -3-.

NOTE:

The threaded connections -1, 2 and 4- are already separated.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the lines and hoses, as well as the engine compartment by lowering the engine/transmission assembly.

- Make sure all connections between the engine, transmission, subframe and body have been disconnected.

- Carefully guide the engine/transmission assembly with the subframe out of engine compartment when lowering.

-- Lower the : VAS6131B  with the engine/transmission assembly and remove from under the vehicle.
