Overview - Muffler

NOTE:
After exhaust system repairs, make sure exhaust system is not under stress and is far enough from the body. If necessary, loosen clamping sleeve and align muffler and exhaust pipe so that there is adequate distance to body and that weight is evenly distributed among the suspended mounts.
The exhaust manifold and turbocharger are one component; Removing and Installing. Refer to TURBOCHARGER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

- Coat the exhaust manifold stud bolts with hot bolt paste. For the correct hot bolt paste. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
- Heated Oxygen Sensor
- There are different component locations. Refer to OVERVIEW - HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR .
- Removing and installing. Refer to HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Front Exhaust Pipe with Catalytic Converter
- Decoupling element must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise it may be damaged
- Do not load decoupling element on cable
- Do not damage wire mesh at decoupling element
- Protect catalytic converter from shocks and impact stress
- Removing and installing. Refer to FRONT EXHAUST PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Remove flex joint guard on replacement part as late as possible
- Align the exhaust system free of tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING WITHOUT TENSION .
- Front Clamping Sleeve
- Before tightening, align exhaust system free of tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING WITHOUT TENSION .
- Tighten threaded connections evenly.

- Center- and Rear Muffler
- One unit in original equipment For repairs, replace each separately
- Center and rear mufflers, separating. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS, SEPARATING .
- Align the exhaust system free of tension. Refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM, INSTALLING WITHOUT TENSION .
- Tunnel bridge
- To remove and install. Refer to TUNNEL BRIDGE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
- Nut
- Tightening specification. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - TRIM PANELS .

-- Install the clamping sleeve so that the bolt end -arrow- does not project beyond the lower edge of clamping sleeve.
