Overview - Cylinder Head: Notes

NOTE:
The cylinder head for cylinder bank 2 (left) is shown in the illustration.
- Cylinder Head Gasket
- Replace:
- Vehicles with a turbocharger, refer to CYLINDER HEAD REMOVING, VEHICLES WITH A TURBOCHARGER .
- Identification, refer to Fig 3
- Installed position: the part number faces the cylinder head
- Change the coolant and engine oil after replacing
- Replace:
- Cylinder Head
- Only set the removed cylinder head down on a foam pad. Otherwise the glow plugs can be damaged.
- Removing:
- Vehicles with a turbocharger, refer to CYLINDER HEAD REMOVING, VEHICLES WITH A TURBOCHARGER .
- Installing, refer to CYLINDER HEAD, INSTALLING, ALL ENGINES .
- Check for distortion, refer to Fig 2
- It is not permitted to re-work the cylinder heads on TDI engines
- Change the coolant and engine oil after replacing

- Tightening specification and sequence, refer to Cylinder Head - Tightening Specification and Sequence .
-- Check the cylinder head at several locations for distortion using a Straight Edge - 500 mm VAS 6075 and a feeler gauge.
- Maximum permissible distortion: 0.1 mm.

It is not permitted to re-work the cylinder heads on TDI engines

NOTE:
Depending on piston projection, varying cylinder head gasket thicknesses can be installed, refer to PISTON PROJECTION, MEASURING AT TOP DEAD CENTER (TDC) . If replacing the cylinder head gasket, make sure the new cylinder head gasket with the same identification.
The cylinder head gaskets for the left and right cylinder head cannot be interchanged because they each have a different shape.
