Removing And Installing
- Transmission removed.
- The transmission is secured on the Gearbox Support T40173 with the tensioning strap -1-.
-- Tilt the transmission using the Gearbox Support T40173 toward the rear and slightly left so that no transmission fluid flows out.
-- Remove bolts -arrows- on left flange shaft mounting bracket.
Danger of damaging the shaft seal.
- If the shaft is not centered when removing, the shaft splines -2- fall onto the inner shaft seal -arrow 3- between the final drive and the transmission housing.
- Always replace a damaged shaft seal. Refer to LEFT SEAL, REPLACING .
-- Remove the left flange shaft from the transmission in the -direction of arrow A-.
If it is not possible to remove the left flange shaft by hand, then use the Slide Hammer Set VW771 to remove it.
Attach the plate from the Puller - Flanged Shaft T10037 to the flange shaft -arrows- and attach the spindle from the Slide Hammer Set VW771 (nuts -A-).
-- Remove the clutch module. Refer to CLUTCH MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Danger of causing damage to the clutch module when removing and installing.
- Pay attention to the repair information. Refer to CLUTCH MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Left Flange Shaft, Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
-- Always clean the transmission housing in the area where the differential is accessed -arrow A- and the shaft seal -arrow B-.
Replace the left flange shaft seal (between the differential and transmission housing) -arrow B- if it is damaged. Refer to LEFT SEAL, REPLACING .
-- Clean the space between the sealing and dust lip and fill halfway with Sealing Grease G 052 128 A1.
-- Clean the left flange shaft thoroughly.
Vehicles through VIN 8K0BA088680 or 8FXBN009589K
-- Check the pre-tension on the ball bearing for the left flange shaft based on the wear pattern on the bearing bracket -arrow-. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT BALL BEARING PRE-TENSION, CHECKING, VEHICLES THROUGH VIN 8K0BA088680 OR 8FXBN009589 .
- Optimize the pre-tension on the ball bearing for the left flange shaft if necessary. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT BALL BEARING PRE-TENSION, OPTIMIZING, VEHICLES THROUGH VIN 8K0BA088680 OR 8FXBN009589 .
- Adjust the pre-tension on the ball bearing for the left flange shaft if necessary. Refer to LEFT FLANGE SHAFT BALL BEARING PRE-TENSION, ADJUSTING VEHICLES THROUGH VIN 8K0BA088680 OR 8FXBN009589 .
Continuation for all
-- Install the clutch module -1-. Refer to CLUTCH MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Rotate the clutch module -1- until the opening to the differential -arrow 3- is seen.
-- Install the left flange shaft -2- into the transmission -arrow B-. When doing this, insert the flange shaft centrally into the shaft seal on the front differential -arrow 3-.
Danger of damaging the shaft seal.
- If the shaft is not centered, the shaft splines -2- will damage the shaft seal -arrow 3- between the differential and transmission housing.
- Always replace a damaged shaft seal. Refer to LEFT SEAL, REPLACING .
-- Tighten the left flange shaft mounting bracket -arrows-. Tightening specification. Refer to -item 1- Bolt (See Figure).
If any transmission fluid leaks out, the transmission fluid must be refilled after installing the transmission. Checking the oil level. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING .
