Center Differential Housing, Transmission Installed
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Engine/Transmission Jack VAG 1383 A
- Transmission Support 3282
- Oil Collecting and Extracting Device VAG 1782
- Protective eyewear
Removing
- Transmission installed.
There is a risk of damaging the transmission.
- Do not let the engine run or tow vehicle without gear oil.
General repair instructions, refer to REPAIR INFORMATION .
Clean working conditions for the automatic transmission. Refer to CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Remove the rear noise insulation -2-. .
Danger of damaging the flex joint in the front muffler.
- Do not bend the decoupling element in the front muffler more than 10°.
-- Loosen the bolts -arrows-, slide the sleeve to the rear and tie up the front muffler to the side.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the driveshaft heat shield (if equipped).
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Danger of damaging the transmission fluid pan.
- Never use the transmission fluid pan as a support for the transmission.
-- Install the 2 flat mounts -1- and -2- in the 3282.
-- Mount the 3282 on the VAG 1383 A.
-- Support the transmission at the bolting surfaces on the transmission fluid with a rubber pad -3- as illustrated.
-- Lift the transmission slightly using the VAG 1383 A.
There is the risk of an accident.
- The VAG 1383 A may only be used during assembly and must not sit unsupervised under the vehicle.
-- Remove the bolts from the tunnel crossmember -arrows-.
-- Remove the nuts -arrow- and the tunnel crossmember.
-- Place the VAG 1782 under the transmission.
-- Drain the gear oil from the transfer case. Refer to TRANSFER CASE GEAR OIL, DRAINING AND FILLING .
-- Lower the transmission with the VAG 1383 A just far enough until the transmission fluid pan is not touching the crossbrace -A-.
-- Remove the bolts from the center differential housing in the following sequence: -6 to 1-.
Transmission components could be damaged.
- Carefully remove the center differential housing from the transmission toward the rear. Otherwise the center differential could fall out of the transmission.
-- Secure the center differential -1- so it does not fall out or remove it toward the rear from the input shaft.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
Replace the center differential housing O-ring.
If the center differential -1- was removed:
-- Position the center differential on the input shaft splines. Rotate the center differential slightly when doing this.
-- Make sure the center differential can be turned by hand.
-- Install the housing with the output shaft installed and the new O-ring onto the center differential. Rotate the housing slightly if necessary.
-- Tighten the center differential housing bolts CENTER DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING - TIGHTENING SPECIFICATION AND SEQUENCE .
-- Install tunnel crossmember. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER .
-- Install the driveshaft. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
-- Install exhaust system and adjust free of tension. Refer to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for engine code CAEB, CPMA, CAED, CPMB, or EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS for engine code CALA .
-- Fill gear oil in transfer case. Refer to TRANSFER CASE GEAR OIL, DRAINING AND FILLING .
