Overview - Piston And Connecting Rod

  1. Piston Rings
  2. Piston
    • Checking. Refer to PISTONS, CHECKING .
    • Mark installed location to connecting rod and the cylinder to which it belongs
    • The two deep valve recesses in piston head point toward center of cylinder block.
    • Piston, Installing. Refer to PISTON, INSTALLING .
  3. Circlip
    • Make sure it is secure
  4. Connecting Rod
    • Always replace as a set.
    • Mark which cylinder to which it belongs -B-.
    • Installed position: the markings -A- must align
  5. Bearing Shell
    • Note the installation position
    • Do not interchange used bearing shells.
    • Bearing shell retaining tabs must be firmly seated in the notches.
    • Axial play new: 0.05 to 0.31 mm, wear limit: 0.40 mm
    • Check radial clearance with Plastigauge® , new: 0.02 to 0.07 mm, wear limit: 0.10 mm. Do not turn crankshaft when checking radial clearance
  6. Connecting Rod Bearing Cap
    • Mark which cylinder to which it belongs -B-.
    • Installed position: the markings -A- must align
  7. Bolt
    • 40 Nm + 1 /4 turn (90°)
    • Tighten to 40 Nm to measure radial play, do not turn further.
    • Always replace
    • Lubricate the thread and contact surface.
  8. Cylinder Block
  9. Piston Pin
    • If difficult to move, heat piston to 60 °C (140 °F)
    • Remove and install using the : VW222A
