Timing Chain Guard Upper Section, Removing And Installing

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Hand drill with plastic brush attachment
• Protective eyewear
• Sealant

Removal

Proceed as follows:

-- Remove the intake manifold, refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD .

-- Remove the cylinder head cover, refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- If present, remove the mechanical vacuum pump MECHANICAL VACUUM PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Disconnect electrical connector -arrow- on After-Run Coolant Pump -V51-.

-- Remove the bolts -1-.

-- Mark and disconnect electrical connectors:

1. Camshaft Position Sensor -G40-
2. Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 -N205-
3. Exhaust Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 -N318-
4. Camshaft Position Sensor 2 -G163-

-- Free up electrical wiring on timing chain upper cover.

-- Remove bolts -arrows- and remove timing chain upper cover.

Installation

• Tightening specification, refer to TIMING CHAIN COVERS OVERVIEW .

-- Remove remaining sealant on upper timing chain and cylinder head covers, e.g, with a rotating plastic brush.

-- Clean sealing surfaces, must be free of oil and grease.

-- Cut the tube nozzle at the front marking (nozzle diameter: approximately 2 mm).

-- Check whether timing chain upper cover fitting sleeves are installed in cylinder head.

-- Lightly coat sealing surface -shaded- on timing chain upper cover with sealant.

-- Tighten timing chain upper cover bolts -arrows- in a diagonal sequence in stages.

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

-- Install the vacuum pump on vehicles with the mechanical vacuum pump MECHANICAL VACUUM PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the After-Run Coolant Pump -V51-, refer to After-Run Coolant Pump -V51-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the cylinder head cover, refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the intake manifold, refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD .
