Procedure
Refer to GENERAL REPAIR INFORMATION .
Refer to TRANSMISSION, CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Remove the left and right front wheels.
-- Remove the particulate filter. Refer to Exhaust System, Emission Controls .
-- Remove the primary catalytic converter. Refer to Exhaust System, Emission Controls .
Vehicles without A SCR Catalytic Converter
-- Remove the left rear coolant Lines. Refer to COOLANT PIPES OVERVIEW .
Vehicles with A SCR Catalytic Converter
-- Remove the left rear coolant pipe from the transmission. Refer to LEFT REAR COOLANT PIPE ON TRANSMISSION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
All Vehicles
-- Remove the air guide hose -arrows-.
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to Wheel Housing Liners .
-- Remove the nuts and bolts -arrows- from the refrigerant line clamps.
When connections are loosened, coolant lines may be moved aside slightly to position the Supports10-222A/19 on the longitudinal members.
-- Mount the Engine Support Bridge10-222A with the ConnectionsT40091/3 and 2 spindles on the fender bolting edge.
- Spindles are at front.
-- Engage hooks on both spindles at both engine rear lifting eyes.
-- Install additional Engine Support Bridge10-222A parts as illustrated. Position Supports10-222A/19 on notches in longmembers.
-- Slide SupportT40091/2 with SlideT40093/5 into both ConnectorsT40093/4.
Secure SupportT40091/2 with ConnectorT40093/4 pins and splints.
-- Engage hooks on short Spindle10-222A/10 at front right engine lifting eye.
-- Lightly tension engine by tightening the 3 spindles evenly.
Only tension engine, do not lift.
-- Remove rear driveshaft. Refer to REAR FINAL DRIVE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove transfer case. Refer to TRANSFER CASE OVERVIEW .
-- Remove the bolts -1 through 4- and remove the selector lever cable heat shield.
-- Remove the ball head -2- on the selector lever cable from the selector lever using the Pry Lever80-200.
-- Remove the clip -1- and the selector lever cable from the transmission.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
-- Remove the bolts -2- and remove the selector lever cable bracket.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the strap for the primary catalytic converter.
-- Remove the connector -arrow- for the Engine Speed Sensor -G28- from the bracket and disconnect it.
-- Disconnect the connectors -1 through 3-.
Place a cloth under separation point to collect to escaping ATF.
Refer to TRANSMISSION, CLEAN WORKING CONDITIONS .
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2- and the ATF Lines from the transmission.
-- Seal any open lines and connections with a clean plug from the Engine Bung SetVAS6122.
-- Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Insert the adapter Crankshaft SocketT40058 guide pins as follows:
- The large diameter -arrow 1- faces the engine.
- The small diameter -arrow 2- faces the adapter.
-- Counter hold the crankshaft with the Crankshaft SocketT40058 and loosen the torque converter bolts.
Danger of camshaft timing chain jumping off.
- Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.
-- If equipped, remove the cover -arrow-.
-- Remove the 6 torque converter bolts -arrow- in the opening for the started; to do this, turn the crankshaft 120° in direction of engine rotation.
-- Remove the engine/transmission connecting bolts -3 through 6- and -8 through 10-.
Screw -7- remains installed hand-tight.
-- Mount the Transmission Support3282 on the Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A.
-- Lay the Transmission Support - Mounting Plate 493282/49 on the Transmission Support3282 as illustrated.
-- Align the arms on the transmission support with the holes in the adjusting plate.
-- Attach the support elements on the adjusting plate as illustrated.
-- Guide Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A with Transmission Support3282 under transmission.
The arrow symbol on the adjustment plate points in the direction of travel.
-- Align the adjusting plate so that it is parallel to the transmission.
-- Secure mount to threaded hole at back of transmission with an M10 x 20 bolt -arrow-.
-- Position side mounts at left and right in oil pan notch as shown in illustration.
-- Lift the transmission slightly.
-- Remove last connecting bolt between engine and transmission.
-- Press transmission off of engine while pressing torque converter off of drive plate in direction of -arrow-.
-- Carefully lower transmission using Engine/Gearbox JackVAG1383A.
A torque converter that slips out can destroy the ATF pump driver if the Bracket - Multiple Use30-211A is mounted.
When converter is inserted correctly, distance -a- between contact surfaces on threaded holes and on converter and torque converter bell housing contact surfaces is at least 19 mm.
-- Use the Bracket - Multiple Use30 - 211A to secure the torque converter inside the transmission from falling out.
