Final drive/transmission housing oil seal, replacing

NOTE:

A faulty oil seal will allow gear oil to enter the torque converter bell housing.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Drip tray V.A.G 1306
Extractor lever VW 681
Thrust piece T10139

Removing

Transmission removed
Transmission fastened to assembly stand → Securing transmission to repair stand

CAUTION: The transmission must not be set down on the ATF cooler or oil pan.

Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 under the transmission.
Remove right flange shaft → Right flange shaft, removing and installing .

Unscrew bolts of final drive cover in reverse order of tightening sequence shown in illustration and remove cover together with outer race for tapered roller bearing and shim.

NOTE:

The shim must be the correct size and must not be replaced by a shim with a different thickness.

Remove differential.

Remove tapered roller bearing outer race - 1 - for differential and shim - 2 - located behind it from transmission housing by hand.

NOTE:

The shim must be the correct size and must not be replaced by a shim with a different thickness.

Remove left drive flange → Left flange shaft, removing and installing .

Pull out sealing ring.

NOTE:

Extractor lever must be positioned behind both sealing lips of the seal. Do not apply the lever to the outer circumference of the seal, as this would damage the contact surface in the transmission. Guide the lever carefully when prying the seal.

Installing

Examine oil seal seat in transmission housing for damage; if necessary rework.
Coat outer circumference and sealing lip of seal with gear oil.

NOTE:

Push seal onto press piece with protruding sealing lip on seal facing tool.

Drive new oil seal in up to stop.

Insert shim - 2 - and tapered roller bearing outer race - 1 - for differential onto stop in transmission housing by hand.

Replace O-ring - arrow -.
Insert differential into transmission housing.

If the outer race for taper roller bearing and shim have fallen out of final drive cover:

Lubricate shim and outer race for taper roller bearing with gear oil and insert into final drive cover as far as the stop.

Install final drive cover.

Tightening sequence:

Tighten bolts - 1 - and - 2 - to 3 Nm.
Tighten bolts - 1 to 11 - in sequence shown to specified torque.
Install left flange shaft → Left flange shaft, removing and installing .
Install right flange shaft → Right flange shaft, removing and installing .

Top off and check gear oil level in front final drive → Front final drive gear oil .

Tightening torque
