Selector lever cable, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
- Pry lever RMV outside mirror 80-200
- Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A
Removing
- Shift selector lever into "D" position.
- Activate vehicle jack mode → 43 - Self Leveling Suspension .
- Switch ignition off.
- Remove intake hose between air cleaner and throttle valve unit on both sides.
- Remove selector lever handle → Selector lever handle, removing and installing .
- Remove front ashtray → 68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT .
- Remove center console cover → 68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT .
- Remove harness connector - 1 - from protective sleeve - 2 -.
- Disconnect harness connector - 1 - for circuit board.
- Disconnect harness connector - 3 - for Shift Lock Solenoid.
NOTE:
- The harness connector - 3 - is also covered by a protective sleeve.
- To remove cover from shift mechanism, carefully release retaining tabs - arrows - one after the other.
- Pull cover slightly upward until cover guides - 1 - are outside of holes - 2 - on shift mechanism.
- Then lift rear of cover upward in direction of - arrow - and at the same time pull it over the crossmember of center console - 3 -.
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove crossmember - A - below exhaust system.
- Separate front exhaust pipes with catalytic converter from rear exhaust system - arrows - and tie them up to the side.
- Remove heat shield - B -.
- Remove air duct - 1 - from transmission.
- Remove sound insulation panel - 2 - below transmission.
- Remove heat shield - 3 - for driveshaft.
- Unbolt driveshaft - 4 - at transmission and tie up or support.
- Unbolt heat shield - 5 - above driveshaft and push toward rear.
CAUTION:
Transmission must not be supported at the transmission oil pan, otherwise it will be damaged and must be replaced.
- Support transmission with engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A and trolley jack - B - from below.

NOTE:
- The transmission can also be supported beneath the oil pan with transmission support 3282 → Rear transmission supports and transmission mounts, removing and installing .
- Mark installation position of the transmission crossmember at body - arrows -.
- Unbolt transmission crossmember from body - arrows -.
- Carefully lower engine and transmission at rear.
NOTE:
- The front exhaust pipes should not come into contact with the subframe.
- Remove shield from selector shaft lever.
- Pry off selector lever cable - 1 - from selector shaft lever - 3 - e.g. using pry lever RMV outside mirror 80-200.
- Remove locking clip - 2 - on support bracket for selector lever cable and remove selector lever cable.
- Guide selector lever cable - 1 - between body - arrows - and cross member for transmission - 2 -.
- Secure crossmember for transmission to body again so that engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A can be removed from beneath transmission for the following steps.
- Pry off retaining washers - arrows - for sound insulation panel - 2 - from cover for shift mechanism.
- If equipped, remove bolt for sound insulation panel.
- Guide sound insulation panel - 2 - over selector lever cable - 1 - and out.
- Lower vehicle.
- Pry bowden cable - 1 - for manual release out from bracket - 2 -.
- Loosen nuts - 3 - approx. one turn.
- Remove bolts - 4 -.
- Carefully lift shift mechanism upward and out from cover for shift mechanism.

- At the same time, guide out actuator mechanism for manual release - A - and selector lever cable - B - from cover.
NOTE:
- If necessary, unclip rubber sleeve for selector lever cable from cover.
- Loosen bolt - arrow - for selector lever cable clamp with socket insert Torx 25.
- Remove locking clip - C - for selector lever cable at shift mechanism toward front.
- Remove shift mechanism. At the same time, pull selector lever cable out of shift mechanism, being careful not to bend or kink the cable.
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove selector lever cable out of cover from below.
Installing
Installation is in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
Torque specifications for nuts and bolts and whether nuts and bolts are to be replaced, refer to → Shift mechanism, assembly overview and → Shift mechanism, disassembling and assembling .
- Shift selector lever and selector shaft lever in "D" position.
- Insert selector lever cable with rubber sleeve into cover for shift mechanism from below.
- Lower vehicle.

- Insert selector lever cable - B - into shift mechanism and into hole for selector lever cable clamp - arrow -.
- Install locking clip - C - for selector lever cable to shift mechanism.
- Installation position: The angled end of the locking clip faces upward.
- Carefully guide shift mechanism into cover for shift mechanism, paying attention to actuator mechanism for manual release - A -.
NOTE:
- The bowden cable must be routed beneath the right mounting bracket - D - for shift mechanism.
- Guide cover over selector lever - 4 - and at the same time under crossmember for center console - 3 - at front.
- Swing cover downward at rear in direction of - arrow -.
- Insert guides - 1 - of cover into holes - 2 - of shift mechanism.
- Push down on cover until retainer tabs - arrows - clip into place.
- Raise vehicle.

- Unbolt transmission crossmember from body - arrows -.
- Carefully lower engine and transmission at rear.
NOTE:
- The front exhaust pipes should not come into contact with the subframe.
- Check that rubber sleeve for selector lever cable is properly installed in cover for shift mechanism.
- Guide sound insulation panel - 2 - over selector lever cable - 1 - to the shift mechanism cover.
- Install new lock washers - arrows -.
- If equipped, install bolt for sound insulation panel to 2 Nm.
- Route selector lever cable - 1 - above securing points - arrows - for crossmember/transmission - 2 -.
NOTE:
- Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
- Insert selector lever cable - 1 - into support bracket/transmission and carefully press cable onto selector shaft lever. When doing this, take care not to bend the lever/selector shaft, otherwise the shift mechanism cannot be adjusted correctly.
- Carefully raise engine and transmission at rear making sure not to pinch the selector lever cable.
CAUTION:
Transmission must not be supported at the transmission oil pan, otherwise it will be damaged and must be replaced.
- When installing crossmember to body, observe installation position (markings from removal).
- Tighten bolts - arrows - to specified torque Crossmember to body: .
- Bolt driveshaft to transmission flange → 39 FINAL DRIVE, DIFFERENTIAL .
- Reconnect front exhaust pipes to rear exhaust system →

- 26 - EXHAUST SYSTEM, EMISSION CONTROLS for 4.2 LITER V8 5V ENGINE MECHANICAL, ENGINE CODE(S): BFM
- 26 - EXHAUST SYSTEM, EMISSION CONTROLS for 5.2 LITER 10-CYL. 4V ENGINE MECHANICAL, ENGINE CODE(S): BSM
- 26 - EXHAUST SYSTEM, EMISSION CONTROLS for 6.0 LITER 12-CYL. 4V ENGINE MECHANICAL, ENGINE CODE(S): BSB
- Adjust selector lever cable → Selector lever cable, checking and adjusting .
- Install front ashtray and center console cover → 68 - INTERIOR EQUIPMENT .
- Connect Ground (GND) strap to battery. → 27 - BATTERY, STARTER, GENERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL .
- Check shift mechanism → Selector mechanism, checking .
