Cylinder Head Removal
NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damaging the wires and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the engine coolant temperature drops below 100°F (38°C) before loosening the cylinder head bolts.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
- Relieve the fuel pressure (see FUEL PRESSURE RELIEVING ).
- Drain the engine coolant, '04-05 models (see '04-05 MODELS ), '06-08 models (see '06-08 MODELS ).
- Remove the drive belt (see DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT ).
- Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector (A).
- Disconnect the vacuum hose (B) and breather pipe (C), then remove the air intake duct (D).
- Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B) (see FUEL LINE/QUICK-CONNECT FITTING REMOVAL ).
- Remove the intake manifold, '04-05 models (see REMOVAL ('04-05 MODELS) ) or '06-08 models (see REMOVAL ('06-08 MODELS) ).
- Remove the exhaust manifold (see EXHAUST MANIFOLD REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ).
- Remove the bolt (A) securing the connecting pipe.
- Disconnect the water bypass hose (B).
- Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) and brake booster vacuum hose (B).
- Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (A) and remove the ground cable (B).
- Remove the upper radiator hose (A) and heater hoses (B).
- Remove the engine wire harness connectors and wire harness clamps from the cylinder head.
- Four injector connectors
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector ('04-05 models)
- Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 1 connector ('06-08 models)
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor A/B connectors
- Rocker arm oil control solenoid (VTEC solenoid valve) connector
- Rocker arm oil pressure switch (VTEC oil pressure switch) connector
- Remove the two bolts (A) securing the EVAP canister purge valve bracket and remove the bolt (B) securing the harness bracket.
- Remove the cam chain (see CAM CHAIN REMOVAL ).
- Remove the rocker arm assembly (see ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY REMOVAL ).
- Remove the cylinder head bolts. To prevent warpage, loosen the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time, repeat the sequence until all bolts are loosened.
- Remove the cylinder head.
