Check the oil

NOTE: Only ATF oil that fulfills Dexron II E/III and Ford Mercon standards may be used.

Check the oil by taking a sample with the dipstick.

Discolored or burnt smell?

Check whether the on-board diagnostic (OBD) system has recorded diagnostic trouble code (AT-235)
If diagnostic trouble code (DTC) AT-235 is stored, smell the oil
Also fault-trace the transmission according to diagnostic trouble code (DTC) AT-235

Is there water in the oil (gray discoloration)?

Determine the cause of water in the oil
Replace transmission according to Replacing the transmission
Flush oil cooler, pipes and oil hoses according to Cleaning and inspection .
