DTC 213 & DTC 214: Rear Wheel Sensor Signal - Wheel Speed Incorrect

  1. If fault is intermittent, go to step 9). If fault is permanent, check if additional DTCs are present. If only DTCs 213 and 214 are present, go to step 3). If DTCs 213, 214, 313, and/or 314 are present (for same wheel), perform diagnosis starting with step 8) in DTC 313 & 314  test, then go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Use scan tool and enter running values, list No. 1. Test drive vehicle. Maintain an even speed without turning. If wheel in question has the same speed as other wheels, go to step 9). If suspect wheel does not have the same speed as other wheels, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ABS control module. Connect breakout box. Connect ohmmeter between breakout box pins No. 2 and 10 (DTC 213), or between pins No. 1 and 17 (DTC 214). If ohmmeter reads 1040-1160 ohms, go to step 5). If ohmmeter does not read 1040-1160 ohms, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect rear wheel sensor 4-pin connector located above fuel tank. See WHEEL SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. For DTC 213, connect ohmmeter between wheel sensor connector terminals No. 1 (Green/Red wire) and No. 3 (Green/Yellow wire). For DTC 214, connect ohmmeter between wheel sensor connector terminals No. 2 (Green/White wire) and No. 4 (Green/Black wire). For all tests, if ohmmeter reads 1040-1160 ohms, DTC was caused by poor terminal contact. Repair as necessary. If ohmmeter does not read 1040-1160 ohms, check for open circuit in wiring between wheel sensor and connector. Repair as necessary. If wiring is okay, replace wheel sensor.
  5. Ensure ignition is off. Reconnect ABS control module. Turn ignition on. Connect voltmeter between breakout box terminals No. 8 and 10 (DTC 213), or between breakout box terminals No. 8 and 17 (DTC 214). If voltmeter reads 2.3 volts, go to step 8). If voltmeter reads greater than 2.3 volts, go to step 7). If voltmeter reads less than 2.3 volts, go to next step.
  6. Check for a short to ground in wiring between wheel sensor connector terminals and ABS control module. See DTC 213 & 214 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION  table. Refer to wiring diagram for control module terminal identification. Repair as necessary.

  7. Check for a short to voltage in wiring between wheel sensor connector terminals and ABS control module. See DTC 213 & 214 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. Repair as necessary.
  8. Check wheel bearing for suspect wheel. Repair as necessary. If wheel bearing is okay, check for possible seized brakes. Repair as necessary. If brakes are okay, check wheel sensor for dirt, damage, or looseness. Repair or replace as necessary. If wheel sensor is okay, ensure pulse wheel is positioned securely, all teeth are intact, and not scratched. Repair or replace as necessary. If pulse wheel is okay, DTC was caused by poor contact in wheel sensor or ABS control module terminals. Repair as necessary.
  9. If fault is intermittent, check for causes of a locked wheel, such as wheel bearing, brake caliper or parking brake. Check wheel sensor and pulse wheel. Check wheel sensor and ABS control module. Check wiring between ABS control module and wheel sensor for intermittent opens, short to ground, or short to voltage. See DTC 213 & 214 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION  table. Repair as necessary.
