DTC 313 & DTC 314: Rear Wheel Sensor Signal - Circuit Fault

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Volvo 850. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check if additional DTCs are present. If only DTCs 313 and 314 are present, check if fault is permanent or intermittent. If fault is permanent, go to step 3). If fault is intermittent, go to step 12). If DTCs 313 or 314, and DTCs 211-214, and 221-224 or 321-324 are present (for same wheel), go to next step.
  2. Raise and support vehicle so suspect wheel is off the ground. Turn ignition on. Use scan tool and enter running values, list No. 1. Spin wheel. If wheel speed is displayed on scan tool, go to step 12). If wheel speed is not displayed on scan tool, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ABS control module. Connect breakout box. Connect ohmmeter between breakout box pins No. 2 and 10 (DTC 313), or between pins No. 1 and 17 (DTC 314). If ohmmeter reads 1040-1160 ohms, go to step 9). If ohmmeter does not read 1040-1160 ohms, go to next step.
  4. Clean around wheel sensor connector 4-pin connector located above fuel tank. See WHEEL SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect 4-pin connector. For DTC 313, connect ohmmeter between connector terminals No. 1 (Green/Red wire) and No. 3 (Green/Yellow wire). For DTC 314, connect ohmmeter between connector terminals No. 2 (Green/White wire) and No. 4 (Green/Black wire). If ohmmeter reads 1040-1160 ohms for either check, go to next step. If ohmmeter does not read 1040-1160 ohms for either check, check wiring between 4-pin connector and wheel sensor. If wiring is okay, replace wheel sensor.
  5. Connect ohmmeter between 4-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Green/Yellow wire) and breakout box pin No. 10 (DTC 313), or between 4-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Green/Black wire) and breakout box pin No. 17 (DTC 314). If about zero ohms are present, go to step 7). If about zero ohms are not present, go to next step.
  6. Check wheel sensor connector for poor terminal contact. Connect ohmmeter between breakout box pins No. 3 and 10 (DTC 313), or pins No. 4 and 17 (DTC 314). If about zero ohms are present, fault was caused by poor contact in wheel sensor connector. If about zero ohms are not present, check for an open circuit in wiring between 4-pin connector terminal No. 3 (Green/Yellow wire) and control module terminal No. 10 (DTC 313), or between 4-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Green/Black wire) and control module terminal No. 17. Repair as necessary.
  7. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect 4-pin wheel sensor connector located above fuel tank. See WHEEL SENSORS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect control module connector. Connect ohmmeter between sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Green/Red wire) and breakout box pin No. 2 (DTC 313), or between sensor connector terminal No. 2 (Green/White wire) and breakout box pin No. 1 (DTC 314). If zero ohms are present, go to next step. If zero ohms are not present, check wheel sensor connector for poor terminal contact. Repair as necessary. If terminal contact is okay, check wiring for an open circuit. Repair as necessary.
  8. Connect ohmmeter between breakout box pins No. 2 and 10 (DTC 313), or between pins No. 1 and 17 (DTC 314). If about zero ohms are present, DTC was caused by poor terminal contact. If about zero ohms are not present, check wiring between wheel sensor and control module for a short circuit.
  9. Turn ignition off. Reconnect control module. Turn ignition on. Connect voltmeter between breakout box pins No. 8 and 10 (DTC 313), or between pins No. 8 and 17 (DTC 314). If about 2.3 volts are present, DTC was caused by poor terminal contact at control module connector. If less than 2.3 volts are present, go to next step. If greater than 2.3 volts are present, go to step 11).
  10. Check for a short to ground in wiring between wheel sensor connector terminals and ABS control module. See DTC 313 & 314 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION  table. Refer to wiring diagram for control module terminal identification. Repair as necessary.
    DTC 313 & 314 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION

    DTC 313
    1 2
    3 10
    DTC 314
    2 1

  11. Check for a short to voltage in wiring between wheel sensor connector terminals and ABS control module. See DTC 313 & 314 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION table. Repair as necessary.
  12. If fault is intermittent, check wheel sensor and control module connectors for poor terminal contact. Repair as necessary. Check for intermittent opens, short to ground, or short to voltage in wiring between wheel sensor connector and control module. See DTC 313 & 314 TERMINAL IDENTIFICATION  table. Refer to wiring diagram for control module terminal identification. Repair as necessary.
