FAULT CODE 234 Or 244

Conditions For Fault Code - If voltage in circuit is high for over 10 seconds, DTC 233 or 234 will be stored if a short to voltage is detected.

Fault Symptom - None, except illumination of SRS warning light.

Fault Source - Short to voltage exists in wiring harness, connectors, sensor module or seat belt tensioners.

Corrective Action

1) Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect connector to suspect seat belt tensioner. Connect SRS test resistor (998 8695) to suspect seat belt tensioner. See Figure.

2) Turn ignition switch to II position. Connect negative battery cable. Read DTC. Clear DTC. If DTC can be cleared, fault is probably seat belt tensioner. Go to next step. If DTC cannot be cleared, fault is probably in SRS ignition cable. Go to step 4).

3) Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect test resistor (998 9695). Connect connector to seat belt tensioner. Turn ignition switch to II position. Read DTC. If DTC is present, replace seat belt tensioner. See SEAT BELT TENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

4) If DTC is not present, the fault is in SRS wiring harness. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect SRS test resistor (998 8695) to seat belt tensioner. See Figure.

5) Remove soundproofing and knee bolster for access to connector 24/3 (driver-side seat belt tensioner) see Figure, or remove glove compartment for access to connector 24/4 (passenger-side seat belt tensioner) see Figure. Disconnect connector "A" from connector 24/3 (driver-side tensioner) or connector "B" from connector 24/4 (passenger-side tensioner).

6) Disconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to II position. For driver-side tensioner, measure resistance from battery positive cable to terminals No. 7 of connector "A", then measure resistance from battery positive cable to terminals No. 8 of connector "A".

7) For passenger-side tensioner, measure resistance from battery positive lead to terminal No. 17 of connector "B", then measure resistance from battery positive lead to terminal No. 18 of connector "B". If resistance is about zero ohms in any measurements, replace SRS cable harness. If resistance is infinity, go to next step.

8) Measure resistance from battery positive cable to terminal No. 7 and then terminal No. 8 in connector 24/3 where connector "A" was connected. Remove connector "B" from connector 24/4. Measure resistance from ground to terminal No. 17 and 18 of connector "B". If resistance is about 25000 or 75000 ohms, replace SRS cable harness. If resistance is about zero ohms, go to next step.

9) Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect SRS sensor module connector. Turn ignition switch to II position. For driver-side tensioner, measure resistance from battery positive cable and terminal No. 7 and then terminal No. 8 of connector 24/3 where connector "A" was connected. For passenger-side tensioner, measure resistance from battery positive cable to connector terminal No. 17 and then terminal No. 18 of connector "B".

10)If resistance is infinity in any of the measurements, replace sensor module. See SENSOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is about zero ohms for any of the measurements, replace SRS cable harness. Clear fault codes and perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
