FAULT CODE 231 Or 241

Conditions For Fault Code - If resistance is too low or capacitance too high for over 10 seconds, DTC 231 or 241 is stored.

Fault Symptom - None, except illumination of SRS warning light.

Fault Source - There is a short in SRS harness, seat belt tensioners, connectors or igniter (igniter resistance is too low).

Corrective Action

1) Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect connector to suspect seat belt tensioner. Connect SRS test resistor (998 8695) to suspect seat belt tensioner. See Figure.

2) Turn ignition switch to II position. Connect negative battery cable. Read DTC. Clear DTC. If DTC can be cleared, fault is probably seat belt tensioner. Go to next step. If DTC cannot be cleared, fault is probably in contact reel or SRS ignition cable.

3) Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect test resistor (998 9695). Connect connector to seat belt tensioner. Turn ignition switch to II position. Read DTC. If DTC is present, replace seat belt tensioner. See SEAT BELT TENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

4) If DTC is not present, the fault is in the SRS ignition cable. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect SRS test resistor (998 8695) to suspect seat belt tensioner. See Figure.

5) Remove soundproofing and knee bolster for access to driver side seat belt tensioner. Remove glove compartment for access to passenger-side seat belt tensioner connector. Disconnect connector "A" from connector 24/3 (driver-side tensioner) see Fig 1, or connector "B" from connector 24/4 (passenger-side tensioner) see Fig 2. Measure resistance between terminal No. 7 and terminal No. 8 of connector "A" (driver-side tensioner) or between terminal No. 17 and terminal No. 18 of connector "B"

6) If resistance is infinite, go to step 8). If resistance is about zero ohms, there is a short between connectors 24/3 or 24/4 and igniter connector. If resistance is about 2-3 ohms, replace SRS cable harness.

7) Ensure ignition is off. Measure resistance between terminals No. 7 and No. 8 in connector 24/3 where connector "A" was disconnected (driver-side tensioner) or between terminals No. 17 and 18 of connector "B" (passenger-side tensioner). If resistance is about 47000 ohms, replace SRS cable harness. If resistance is about zero ohms, go to next step.

8) Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect SRS sensor module connector. Measure resistance between terminals 7 and 8 in connector 24/3 where connector "A" was disconnected (driver-side tensioner) or between terminals No. 17 and 18 of connector "B" (passenger-side tensioner). If resistance is infinite, replace sensor module. See SENSOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.If resistance is about zero ohm, replace SRS cable harness. Clear fault codes and perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
