FAULT CODE 212 Or 222

Conditions For Fault Code - If resistance is too high or capacitance too low for over 10 seconds, OBD unit measures a resistance higher than is normal for air bag igniter(s), DTC 212 or 222 will be set.

Fault Symptom - None, except illumination of SRS warning light.

Fault Source - There is an open in SRS harness, connectors, air bag module(s), or contact reel or resistance too high in igniter.

Corrective Action

1) Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect connector to suspect air bag module. Connect SRS test resistor (998 8695) to suspect air bag module. See Figure.

2) Turn ignition switch to II position. Connect negative battery cable. Read DTC. Clear DTC. If DTC can be cleared, fault is probably air bag module. Go to next step. If DTC cannot be cleared, fault is probably in contact reel or wiring harness. Go to step 5).

4) Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect test resistor (998 9695). Connect connector to air bag module. Turn ignition switch to II position. Read DTC. If DTC is present, replace air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULE .

5) If DTC is not present, the fault is in the contact reel or SRS wiring harness. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Connect SRS test resistor (998 8695) to air bag module. See Figure.

6) Remove ignition key from switch. Remove screws and upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect contact reel connector. Measure resistance between terminal No. 1 on contact reel side of connector and terminal No. 1 on igniter connector. See Fig 1. Continue measuring resistance while turning steering wheel to full lock in both directions.

7) Measure resistance between terminal No. 2 on contact reel side of connector and terminal No. 2 on igniter connector. Continue measuring resistance while turning steering wheel to full lock in both directions. If resistance is about zero ohms, go to step 8). If resistance is infinity at any time, replace contact reel. See STEERING WHEEL & CONTACT REEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

8) Ensure ignition is off. Measure resistance between service hole in igniter connector and terminal No. 2 of igniter connector. Resistance should increase rapidly to infinity. Reverse leads of ohmmeter and repeat test. Ohmmeter should drop rapidly to about zero volts and then increase to infinity. If resistance measurements are as specified, the capacitor is okay. Go to next step. If resistance measurements are not as specified, replace contact reel and then go to next step. See STEERING WHEEL & CONTACT REEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

9) Measure resistance between terminals in sensor module half of sensor module. See Figure. If resistance is about 47000 ohms, replace contact reel. See STEERING WHEEL & CONTACT REEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is infinity, go to step 10).

10) Ensure ignition switch is off. Disconnect SRS sensor module connector. Measure resistance between SRS ignition cable connector (removed from contact reel) terminal No. 1 and sensor module connector (removed from sensor module) terminal No. 10. If resistance is about zero ohms, replace sensor module. See SENSOR MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.If resistance is infinity, replace SRS wire harness. Clear fault codes and perform SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
