Removing the camshaft adjuster:
-- Remove the intake manifold upper section. Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD UPPER SECTION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Disconnect the following connectors:
- Camshaft Position Sensor -G40-
- Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 -N205-
- Camshaft Position Sensor 3 -G300-
- Exhaust Camshaft Adjustment Valve 1 -N318-
-- Remove the vacuum pump. Refer to VACUUM PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the coolant pipe from the cover.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and the cover.
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Turn the crankshaft from below using the Counterhold - Multiple Use:T10172A in the direction of engine rotation to the TDC mark on cylinder 1.
- The notch on the vibration damper must align with the mark on the sealing flange -arrow-.
- Cams -A- of cylinder 1 must face each other.
-- Loosen the camshaft adjuster bolt on the exhaust side approximately 1 turn. Counterhold the camshaft wrench surface with a wrench while doing this.
-- Loosen the camshaft adjuster bolt on the intake side approximately 1 turn. Counterhold the camshaft wrench surface with a wrench while doing this.
-- Insert the Camshaft Bar: T10068 A in both shaft grooves. If necessary, slightly turn the camshaft back and forth using an open end wrench.
-- Secure the high pressure pump drive chain sprocket position with the Adjustment Tool:T10363 . The marking -A- on the on high pressure pump drive pinion must be at the top.
If the lug on the vacuum pump drive is not vertical: remove the Camshaft Bar:T10068 . Turn the crankshaft farther until the lug is perpendicular and it is possible to insert the Camshaft Bar:T10068 A .
-- Remove the timing chain tensioner -arrow-.
-- Label the chain links opposite the markings on the camshaft adjusters. The labeling of the timing chain simplifies installation.
-- Completely unscrew the camshaft adjuster retaining bolts and remove the camshaft adjuster.
The timing chain is held by the lower timing chain cover on the oil pump chain sprocket. The timing chain cannot skip.
