Brake Shoes, Removing And Installing: Installing

CAUTION:

Risk of injury due to chemical cleaning solutions. Chemical cleaning solutions can be easily inflammable and cause eye and skin irritation.

- Wear protective eyewear, safety gloves and a respirator.

- Pay attention to the safety data sheet and the operating instructions of the chemical.

-- Clean the brake system.

Conditions

Only use commercially available mineral spirits to clean the brake system.

-- Apply grease onto the contact surfaces -arrows-. Refer to Parts Information.

-- Engage the parking brake -1- in the parking brake lever -2-.

-- Install the brake shoe with the parking brake lever -1- using the Assembly Tool: T30114 -3-.

-- Secure the clip -2-.

-- Insert the upper return spring -1- in both brake shoes -2 and 3-.

-- Position the brake shoe without parking brake lever -3- to the brake cylinder -4-, lever around in direction of -arrow- and place down in front of the lower support -5-.

-- Engage the lower return spring -1-. Pry the brake shoe -3- with the help of a water pump pliers -2- in the lower support -4-.

-- Insert the tensioning pin and clamp -1- using the Assembly Tool: T30114 -2-.

-- Pay attention to the correct position of the clamps -2 and 4- and the springs -1 and 3-.

Conditions

Pay attention. The automatic adjuster has a fine mechanism.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the automatic adjuster due to improper handling.

The smallest impressions, cuts or deformations can negatively impair the function of the automatic adjuster.

- Prevent impacts

- Do not bend the components

- Do not adjust at the gear

Conditions

For the optimal function of the brakes a presetting of the automatic adjuster is required. The automatic adjuster must turn freely and be installed without force.

-- The "rough adjustment" will be reached by installing the bolt on the threads in direction of -arrow A-.

-- For a "fine adjustment" leave the regulator under pressure in direction of -arrow B- and then operate the "fine adjustment".

CAUTION:

Malfunction or risk of damaging the rear brakes due to incorrect settings of the automatic adjuster.

- Perform the manual adjustment of the automatic adjuster to obtain the required diameter on the brake shoes.

-- Turn the automatic adjuster together or apart (rough adjustment) so that it is under light pretension between both brake shoes, to activate the adjuster.

-- Widen the brake shoes -1- using the Assembly Pliers: T10623 -2-.

-- Position the automatic adjuster in the direction of -arrow A- onto the brake shoe using the parking brake lever.

-- Position the lever for the automatic adjuster in the cut-out on both brake shoes -arrow B-.

-- Pay attention to the installation position of the automatic adjuster, the short finger of the automatic adjuster points to the brake carrier and the threaded spindle points to the parking brake lever.

-- Clean the center seat of the brake drum wheel hub. Then, treat with corrosion protection. Refer to Parts Information.

-- Clean the center hole in the brake drum. Then, treat with corrosion protection. Refer to Parts Information.

Conditions

The corrosion protection (refer to Parts Information) must not come in contact with the wheel bolt hole!

-- Install the wheel bearing unit. Refer to WHEEL BEARING UNIT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Conditions

The holes must be used to assemble the Adjusting Device: T10635 .
The threaded holes are only there to store the bolts.

-- Secure the Adjusting Device: T10635 -1- with the included bolts -3- to the wheel hub.

-- Press the brake shoes apart -arrows- using the Assembly Pliers: T10623 -1- for so often until no adjustment at the automatic adjuster can be seen or heard anymore.

-- Remove the Adjusting Device: T10635 .

-- Position the brake drum and secure with the bolt.

Conditions

If reusing the brake drum, clean off any corrosion and pay attention to the permitted maximum wear diameter. Refer to Technical Data, Brakes .

-- Operate the brake pedal at least 25 times using force.

If the Procedures at the Rear Axle Brake Are Complete, Then the Test Plan for the Basic Setting Must Be Completed:

-- Complete the function "Rear brake service" using Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC ENTRIES .

-- Install the wheel. Refer to WHEEL, INSTALLING .

If the Brake Shoes were Replaced:

-- Check the brake fluid level. Refer to BRAKE FLUID LEVEL, CHECKING .
