SUBFRAME With Steering Gear, Removing And Installing: Removing

The Left Front Level Control System Sensor -G78- and the Right Front Level Control System Sensor -G289- will be called front level control system sensor in the information that follows.

The steering gear and the Power Steering Control Module -J500- will be called steering gear in the information that follows.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of fatal injury due to high voltage.

Electrocution by direct contact or electric arc can cause severe bodily injury or fatal injury.

- Have a high-voltage technician (HVT) or a high-voltage expert (HVE) de-energize the high-voltage system.

-- Refer to HIGH-VOLTAGE SYSTEM, DE-ENERGIZING .

-- Refer to WINDSHIELD WIPER, BRINGING INTO SERVICE POSITION .

-- Remove the front underbody trim panel. Refer to FRONT UNDERBODY TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the left and right front wheel housing liner. Refer to FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the front air intake manifold for the heating and A/C unit. Refer to HEATER AND A/C UNIT AIR INTAKE HOUSING, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the battery tray. Refer to BATTERY TRAY, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Refer to COOLANT, DRAINING .

-- Remove the voltage converter. Refer to VOLTAGE CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, RWD or VOLTAGE CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, AWD .

-- Remove the Heating Element (PTC) 3 -Z132-. Refer to HEATING ELEMENT (PTC) 3 -Z132-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, RWD or HEATING ELEMENT (PTC) 3 -Z132-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, AWD .

-- Refer to Vehicle Front Components, Supporting  .

Vehicles with air guide 

-- Remove the left and right air duct. Refer to AIR DUCT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Continuation for all vehicles 

-- Unclip the bracket -2- for the brake lines -3- from the rear right subframe -1-.

-- Remove the bolts -6- for the bracket -1-, -2- and -3- from the subframe -7-.

-- Remove the inner pin and pry out the clip -5-.

-- Free up the coolant pipe -4- on the subframe -7-.

For clarity the image is shown with the subframe -4- removed.

-- Release the hook -3- for the cable guide -1- at the top from the subframe -4- and to do so push to the side -2-.

-- Remove the cable guide -1- upward.

-- Unclip the clip -6- for the wire -2- on the rear crossmember -5-.

-- Remove the clip -8-.

-- Release the locking mechanism -7- and remove the cable guide upward.

-- Remove the bolt -3-.

-- Remove the universal joint -1- from the steering gear -4- in the -direction of the arrow-.

LHD vehicle 

-- Disconnect the connectors -1- and -4- from the steering gear -3-.

-- Unclip the wire from the steering gear.

RHD vehicles 

-- Disconnect the connectors -2- and -3- from the steering gear -1-.

-- Unclip the wire from the steering gear.

Vehicles with front level control system sensor 

-- Remove the left and right front level control system sensor from the lower control arm. Refer to Left and Right Front Level Control System Sensor G78/G289, Removing and Installing .

Continuation for all vehicles 

-- Remove the coupling rod -1- on the stabilizer bar -2- on both sides of the vehicle.

-- Remove the nut -3- from the coupling rod -1-, at the same time, counterhold on the internal multi-point bolt on the coupling rod -1-.

-- Remove the coupling rod -1- from the stabilizer bar -2-.

-- Remove the tie rod end -4- on both sides of the vehicle on the wheel bearing housing -1-.

-- Loosen the nut -2- on the tie rod end -4- but do not remove it. At the same time counterhold with a suitable tool on the pin.

-- Remove the nut -2- only to the end of the threads. To protect the thread, screw the nut -2- on the pin several turns.

CAUTION:

Damage to the wheel bearing housing! Loosened bushings on the wheel bearing housing due to incorrectly inserted puller - ball joint.

- Position the ball joint puller in a way that the lower mount is supported on the socket and not on the wheel bearing housing.

-- Press off the tie rod end -4- from the wheel bearing housing -1- using the Puller - Ball Joint: 3287A  -A-. Remove the nut -2-.

-- Remove the lower control arm -2- on both sides of the vehicle on the ball joint -1-.

-- Remove the nuts -3-.

-- Remove the control arm -2- from the ball joint in the -direction of the arrow A-.

-- Pull the wheel bearing housing -1- outward in the -direction of the arrow B-.

-- Turn away the wheel bearing housing -1- outward, to take the load of the control arm -2-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the impact member -2- from the subframe -1-.

-- Remove the bolt -4- for the brace -3- using the Socket/Bit Set - 39 Piece: VAS 6928  .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the impact member -2- from the subframe -1-.

-- Remove the bolt -4- for the brace -3-.

-- Refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING  .

-- Lower the subframe with the Scissor Lift Table: VAS 6131B  .
