Driveshaft, Removing And Installing, TIGUAN: Removing
-- Lift the vehicle, all four mounts from lifting platform at the same height.
-- Move the selector lever into >>N<<.
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
-- Remove the exhaust system. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .
-- If equipped, remove the drive axle heat shield -1- from the bevel box (-arrows-). Refer to Drive Axle .
The right drive axle heat shield is attached with two or three nuts.
-- Remove the bolts -A- and -B- from the bevel box and remove the heat shield -1-.
-- Remove the center tunnel heat shield under the intermediate bearing. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - HEAT SHIELD .
-- Loosen the driveshaft from the front of the bevel box and the rear final drive, but do not remove it.
-- To loosen the driveshaft threaded connections, counterhold with the Adapter:T10172/5 -1- and the Counterhold Tool:T10172 -2- and also at the rear final drive.
-- Before removing, see if there is a marking (color dot) on the flexible disc and on the final drive flange -arrows-. If not, mark the position of the flexible disc and flange/driveshaft on the final drive with respect to one another -arrows-.
-- Also mark the position of the driveshaft with respect to the flange on the bevel box.
-- Remove the driveshaft bolts from the front of the bevel box -arrows-.
Replace the bolts after removing them.
-- Remove the pendulum support. Remove the bolt -1- first and then the bolts -2- and -3-.
-- Place a cloth on the front subframe to prevent damaging the paint on the driveshaft when it will be placed on it.
To remove the driveshaft from the alignment pin on the bevel box the >>transmission<< must be pushed slightly forward. When pushing into place, make sure that the seal -arrow- in the centering bushing is not damaged.
-- Remove the Engine Support Device - Gearbox Bracket:T10346/1 -2- with a bolt on the transmission on the front threaded connection for the pendulum support -right arrow-.
-- Secure the Engine Support: T50015A -1- with a bolt on the subframe -left arrow- and Engine Support Device - Gearbox Bracket: T10346/1 -2- as shown.
-- Push the engine/transmission as far forward as possible by turning the spindle for the Engine Support:T50015A . Avoid bumping the fan shroud with other components.
-- Place the driveshaft on the subframe until its ultimate removal.
-- Remove the rear tunnel brace. Refer to TUNNEL BRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Loosen all of the intermediate bearing bolts. Remove the two bolts completely. The two remaining bolts -arrows- secure the driveshaft until its ultimate removal.
-- Remove the driveshaft bolts on the rear final drive -arrows-.
Replace the bolts after removing them.
The alignment pins on the bevel box, on the rear final drive and in the center through the intermediate bearing now hold the driveshaft in place.
- A second technician is needed to for the further removal of the driveshaft.
-- While a person holds the driveshaft in the installation position, remove the two remaining bolts -arrows- for the intermediate bearing and if possible, remove the driveshaft to the rear in its fully extended length.
-- When removing and installing the driveshaft, always be careful not to damage the bushing -arrow-.
-- To prevent damaging the protective boot in the center bearing, remove and install the drive axle in its fully extended position; likewise, store it in this position.
