Charge Air System, Checking For Leaks

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Loosen the clamps -1 and 2- and remove the air guide pipe.

-- Release the catches -arrows- and disconnect the air duct hose.

-- Secure the Turbo System Tester Kit - Adapter:V.A.G 1687/6  -B- with a clamp -arrow- to the Turbo System Tester Kit - Adapter:V.A.G 1687/18-1  -A-.

-- Secure the adapter -A- with a clamp -arrow- to the turbocharger connection -1-.

-- Connect the Turbo System Tester Kit:V.A.G 1687  -C- to the plug -B-.

-- Pull up the pressure regulating valve -2- and screw out all the way until it stops.

-- Close valves -3 and 4-.

-- Connect the commercially available pressure hose -1- to the tester -7-.

Requirement

-- Open the valve -3-.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the components if the pressure is set too high.

- Never set the test pressure higher than is specified.

- Open the cap on the oil filler tube that no pressure can be built in the crankcase.

-- Turn the pressure regulating valve -2- until a pressure of 0.2 bar (2.9 psi) is reached.

-- Open the valve -4- and wait until the test circuit is filled.

Requirement

-- Check the charge air circuit for leaking areas:

Tip

A pressure retention test is not possible because small amounts of air can escape into the engine via the valves.

-- Remove the hose couplings.

Tightening Specifications
