Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing And Installing: Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

Requirement

• The spline contour -2- at the three stage chain sprocket -1- must point at the center between the camshaft chain sprockets on an imagined, vertical line -arrow-.

-- Make sure that the three stage chain sprocket -1- is locked with the Assembly Tool:T10531/6  -A-.

Requirement

• The camshaft sprockets -1 and 2- must be in "TDC" position.

-- Make sure that the camshaft chain sprocket -1- is locked with lock -4- and the camshaft chain sprocket -2- is locked with lock -3-.

Requirement

• The marking -arrow B- at the camshaft chain sprocket -1- must be shifted by half a tooth clockwise to the marking -arrow A- at the cylinder head cover.
• The marks -arrow C- and -arrow D- must align.

-- Lay down the camshaft timing chain with the painted links -arrows- on the camshaft pins.

-- Camshaft timing chain on intake camshaft; mount the exhaust camshaft and the three stage chain sprocket.

Requirement

• The painted chain links must align with the markings -arrows- on the chain sprockets.

-- Insert the guide rail -2- and tighten the guide pin -1-.

-- Engage the guide rail -1- into the retainer -arrow-.

Requirement

• The help of a second technician is necessary for the following procedure.

-- Lower the pretension of the exhaust camshaft -1- using the assembly tool -7- in direction of -arrow B- and push the lock -10- from the camshaft chain sprocket splines -1- in direction of -arrow C-.

-- Remove the exhaust camshaft -1- in the direction of -arrow A- until the timing chain touches the guide rail -4-.

-- Hold the exhaust camshaft -1- in position, insert the tensioning rail -8- and tighten the guide pin -9-.

-- Remove the locks -10-.

-- Lower the pretension of the intake camshaft -2- using the assembly tool -1- in direction of -arrow A- and pull the lock -4- out of the camshaft chain sprocket splines -2- in direction of -arrow B- and bring the intake camshaft -2- into resting position.

-- Remove the lock -4-.

-- Remove the Locking Tool:T40435  -A-.

-- Install the bolts -arrows- and tighten them.

-- Check the adjustment.

Requirement

• The painted chain links must align with the markings -arrows- on the chain sprockets.

-- Apply the oil pump drive chain -1-.

-- Insert the chain tensioner -4- and tighten the guide pin -2-.

-- Engage the tension spring -3- in the oil pan upper section -arrow-.

-- Install the Assembly Tool - Turning Over Tool:T10531/3  -A-.

Requirement

• In the TDC position the flat area -C- points upward.

-- Install the Assembly Tool - Knurled Nut:T10531/4  -B-.

-- Turn the crankshaft two turns in direction of engine rotation.

Tip

Due to the ratio, the painted chain links no longer match up after the engine has been turned.

-- Install the bearing bracket. Refer to Bearing Bracket, Removing and Installing  .

-- Perform the adaptation with the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester . Refer to Diagnostic Entries .
