ABS Control Module -J104- AND ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, LHD VEHICLES WITH A DIESEL ENGINE: Removing

Component Location:

The ABS Control Module -J104- is attached to the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- and is located inside the engine compartment on the right side.

ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- with ABS Control Module -J104-
Brake Booster with Tandem Brake Master Cylinder

WARNING:

The brake lines near the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- must not be bent.

-- Read and note the present control module coding using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA)ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (DDSA, DDSB) .

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the subframe. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME .

Vehicles with emissions control module

-- Remove the emissions control module. Refer to OVERVIEW - EMISSIONS CONTROL (CPLA, CPPA, CPKA, CPRA) or OVERVIEW - EMISSIONS CONTROL SYSTEM (DDSA, DDSB) .

All Vehicles

-- If equipped, remove the nut -1- and remove the heat shield -2-.

-- Disconnect and remove the connector from the ABS Control Module -J104- in -direction of the arrow-.

-- Insert the Brake Pedal Actuator: VAG1869/2 .

-- Remove left front caps -1-.

-- Remove left rear caps -1-.

Use a suitable bleeder hose

It must fit tightly on the bleeder valve so that no air can get into the brake system

-- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose -1- to the left front brake caliper breather valve.

-- Open the breather valve.

-- Attach the bleeder bottle bleed hose -1- to the brake caliper breather valve/left rear brake cylinder.

-- Open the breather valve.

-- Push the brake pedal at least 60 mm using the Brake Pedal Actuator: VAG1869/2 .

-- Close the left front and left rear bleeder valves.

Do not remove the Brake Pedal Actuator: VAG1869/2 .

-- Place enough lint-free cloths under the ABS Control Module -J104- and the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-.

Make sure no brake fluid gets on the contacts.

Vehicles with ABS Mark 60 EC ABS/EDS/ASR/ESP

-- First label both brake lines from the brake master cylinder -A- and -B-.

-- Remove the brake lines -A- and -B- from the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-.

-- Seal the threaded hole immediately with plugs from the assembly repair kit.

-- Close brake lines immediately using Sealing Plugs or with suitable plugs from the Engine Bung Set: VAS6122 .

-- Label the brake lines -1- through -4- and then remove them.

-- Seal the threaded hole immediately with plugs from the assembly repair kit.

-- Close brake lines immediately using Sealing Plugs or with suitable plugs from the Engine Bung Set: VAS6122 .

-- Remove the hex fitting bolt from the bracket -arrow-.

-- Remove the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- with the ABS Control Module -J104- and the bracket sideways in -direction of the arrow- from the rubber bushings on the bracket.

-- Turn the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- with the ABS Control Module -J104- upside down.

-- Remove the bracket in the vehicle from the hydraulic unit -arrows- (only on engines with too little clearance between the cross panel and engine).

-- Remove the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- with the ABS Control Module -J104-.

Vehicles with ABS Mark 70 ABS/ASR:

-- Mark the brake lines -A- and -B- from the brake master cylinder.

-- Remove the brake lines -A- and -B- from the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55-.

-- Seal the threaded hole immediately with plugs from the assembly repair kit.

-- Close brake lines immediately using Sealing Plugs or with suitable plugs from the Engine Bung Set: VAS6122 .

-- Mark the brake lines (brake calipers) -1- through -4- and then remove them.

-- Seal the threaded hole immediately with plugs from the assembly repair kit.

-- Close brake lines immediately using Sealing Plugs or with suitable plugs from the Engine Bung Set: VAS6122 .

-- Remove the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- and the ABS Control Module -J104- in -direction of arrow- and pull upward out of the shock absorbers.

-- Turn the ABS Hydraulic Unit -N55- with the ABS Control Module -J104- upside down.

-- Remove the bracket in the vehicle from the hydraulic unit -arrows- (only on engines with too little clearance between the cross panel and engine).
