Cylinder Head Overview

  1. Cylinder Head Gasket
    • Replace
    • Cylinder head gasket identification Fig 4
    • Change the coolant and engine oil after replacing
  2. 10 Nm
    • Install with locking fluid
  3. Camshaft Position Sensor -G40-
  4. Cylinder Head
    • Removing and installing. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD .
    • Only set the removed cylinder head down on a foam pad. Otherwise the glow plugs can be damaged.
    • Check for distortion Fig 3
    • Must not be reworked
    • Make sure both alignment sleeves for centering the cylinder head on the cylinder block are actually there before installing.
    • Change the coolant and engine oil after replacing
  5. Washer
  6. Cylinder Head Bolt
    • Replace
    • Loosening sequence Fig 2
    • Tightening specification and sequence. Refer to Fig 5.
  7. Oil Pressure Switch -F1-, 20 Nm
  8. Seal
    • Replace
  9. 20 Nm
  10. Engine Lifting Eye
  11. Seal
    • Replace
  12. 20 Nm
  13. Seal
    • Replace
  14. Vacuum Pump
  15. 10 Nm
  16. Connecting Piece
    • For the coolant hoses
    • With Coolant Temperature Sensor -G62-
  17. 9 Nm
  18. Seal
    • Replace
  19. 20 Nm
  20. Engine Lifting Eye

-- Loosen the cylinder head bolts in order from -1- to -10-.

-- Check the cylinder head in several places for distortion using a straight edge and a feeler gauge.

NOTE:

It is not permitted to re-work the cylinder heads on TDI engines

NOTE:

Depending on piston projection, varying cylinder head gasket thicknesses can be installed. If replacing the cylinder head gasket, make sure the new cylinder head gasket has the same identification.

NOTE:

Replace the cylinder head bolts.

-- Tighten the bolts in four steps in the sequence shown.

Stage Bolts Tightening specification/additional turn
1. -1- through -10- 30 Nm
2. -1- through -10- 50 Nm
3. -1- through -10- Tighten 90° additional turn
4. -1- through -10- Tighten 90° additional turn
