Fuel Pump -G6- Current Draw, Checking

NOTE:

The vehicle must be fueled with diesel fuel treated for the season. Under some conditions, summer diesel fuel can coagulate at low winter temperatures.

Diesel fuel bought in the summer can be filtered to 0°C (32°F).

Diesel fuel sold during the transition time can be filtered to -10°C (14°F).

Diesel fuel bought in the winter can be filtered to -20°C (-4°F).

If not sure, take a sample of the winter fuel and let it stand at low outside temperatures for approximately 1 hour. If the fuel coagulates at temperatures down to -20°C, then this diesel fuel is not suited for low temperatures. This coagulation can plug the screen in the fuel delivery unit as well as in the fuel filter.

Test conditions:

Battery voltage minimum 12 V. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Diesel fuel temperature above 10°C (50°F).
Voltage supply OK, refer to FUEL PUMP -G6- VOLTAGE SUPPLY, CHECKING .
Fuel pressure OK. Refer to TRANSFER FUEL PUMP -G6- FUEL PRESSURE, CHECKING, ENGINE CODE CJAA .

-- Remove the bench seat. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

-- Unclip the locking flange cover -1- at the tabs -arrows- using the Trim Removal Wedge 3409.

-- Disconnect the connector -arrow- from the fuel delivery unit flange.

-- Connect the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester - Test Adapter - 5 Pin VAS 5565 to the connector and to the fuel delivery unit.

-- Connect the current probe -A- to the red cable labeled "current probe" for the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester - Test Adapter - 5 Pin VAS 5565.

NOTE: The current probe of the Analog/Digital Multimeter FLU83III can also be connected to the red cable - with the label "current probe" - for the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester - Test Adapter - 5 Pin VAS 5565.

-- Turn on the ignition.

-- Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and perform Guided Function "activate fuel pump (check fuel pump)".

NOTE: The Transfer Fuel Pump -G6- is activated now for 30 seconds.

-- Read the current draw on the Analog/Digital Multimeter.

The specified value is maximum 7.5 A:

If the specification is not obtained:

-- Remove the fuel delivery unit. Refer to FUEL DELIVERY UNIT/FUEL LEVEL SENSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Check electric wires between the flange and the fuel pump for continuity.

-- Check the filter screen in the bottom of the fuel delivery unit for dirt or if it is plugged.

If no open circuits or dirt can be found:

-- Replace fuel delivery unit.
