Overview - Crankshaft

The overview is only of the engines without the balance shafts.
- Cylinder Block
- Bearing Shell
- For cylinder block with oil groove
- Replace any worn bearing shells
- Toothed Belt Sprocket
- For oil pump drive

- Bearing Shell
- For bearing cap without oil groove
- Replace any worn bearing shells
- Bolt
- 65 Nm + 90° turn
- Replace after removing
- Bearing Cap
- Bearing cap 1: Belt pulley side
- Bearing cap 3 with notches for thrust washers
- Installed position: Bearing shell retaining tabs in cylinder block and in bearing cap must align
- Thrust Washer

- There are different versions of the cylinder block and bearing caps.
- Pay attention to the locating point
- Crankshaft
- If the vehicle has a manual transmission, then do not install a needle bearing inside the crankshaft. Remove the needle bearing if necessary, refer to CRANKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARING, REPLACING .
- Vehicles with a DSG transmission must have a needle bearing inside the crankshaft; if necessary install the needle bearing, refer to CRANKSHAFT NEEDLE BEARING, REPLACING .
- Axial Play, Measuring, refer to CRANKSHAFT, MEASURING AXIAL CLEARANCE .
- Measure the radial clearance with a Plastigage®.
- New radial clearance: 0.03 to 0.08 mm wear limit: 0.17 mm
- Do not turn crankshaft when measuring radial play
