Short Description

The transmission is remove downward by itself.

Remove the battery, the air filter housing and the starter from above.

Disconnect the coolant hoses from above. Before removing the subframe, the engine and transmission must be supported.

From underneath:

The subframe, with the pendulum support, the steering gear and both control arms are removed all together.

To remove the subframe, refer to Removal and Installation . If done correctly, the subframe can be removed and installed without the customer experiencing increased tire wear later. It is recommended to read this information >>prior<< to removing the transmission. This way, the subframe can be secured and removed correctly.

Locating pins T10096 will be needed.

If the subframe is not secured using the locating pins T10096, then later a wheel alignment will be necessary.

In this case, a wheel alignment is unnecessary. It would be a lot of work and an unnecessary charge!

Installing the locating pins T10096 is simple and very useful.

Removing

-- Move the selector lever into the "P" position.

NOTE:

The battery ground cable must be disconnected for the remainder of the procedure. See if a coded radio is installed. Obtain the anti-theft code beforehand, if necessary.

-- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to one of the following:

For diesel engines, refer to BRM] REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

For gas engines, refer to BPY] REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION CCTA, CBFA] REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

-- Remove the battery, the battery tray bolts -arrows- and tray. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the selector lever cable lock washers -arrows- and cable from the transmission.

NOTE:

Use pliers to remove the lock washers. Do not use a sharp-edged tool. This could damage the rubber grommet.

Both lock washers must be replaced when adjusting the cable.

Remove the cable from the transmission cable bracket. Do not bend the cable.

You can also slide the cable back slightly from the cable bracket and later remove it when lowering the transmission. Watch the cable when lowering the transmission.

During later installation, only engage the new lock washers after you have checked and adjusted the cable. Refer to SELECTOR LEVER CABLE, CHECKING .

-- Place lint free clothes on the transmission fluid cooler and transmission to absorb any leaking coolant.

-- Clamp the coolant hoses using hose clamps up to 25/40 mm dia.3093/3094 and remove the hoses from the transmission fluid cooler.

-- Seal the transmission fluid cooler with clean plugs.

-- Remove the starter -A-. Refer to Removal and Installation .

Remove the lower bolt first.

-- Disconnect the connector -1-.

-- Remove the wire bracket from the black, front transmission cover (two M6 nuts).

-- Remove the upper bolts between the engine and the transmission.

These tools are suitable for this.

-- Remove both filler pieces from the upper edge of the left and right fenders.

-- Disconnect any hoses and wires in the area of the lifting eyes on the engine.

Check in the following engine types for which tools are needed to support the engine.

1.9L TDI PD Engine:

-- Support the engine and transmission. Do not raise them.

-- Install the bracket T10346 to the hole in the back of the battery tray.

-- Use a M6 bolt or a one of the bolts for the battery tray.

-- Support the engine and transmission. Do not raise them.

Continuation for all Engines:

-- Tension the engine/transmission assembly with the spindles, but do not lift.

-- Loosen the left and right front wheel bolts.

-- Lift the vehicle, all 4 lift points of the hoist at same height.

-- Remove the front wheels.

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to Description and Operation .

-- Remove the lower section of the left front wheel housing liner. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the right drive axle heat shield -arrows- and shield, if equipped.

-- Separate the exhaust system at the clamping sleeve and remove the suspended mount bolts -arrows- from the subframe.

-- Tie up the front exhaust pipe.

NOTE:

Do not bend the decoupling element in the front exhaust pipe more than 10° or it will be damaged.

-- Remove the pendulum support bolt from the transmission.

-- Secure the subframe. Refer to Description and Operation .

NOTE:

If the subframe is not secured, a wheel alignment must be performed later.

-- Remove the subframe with steering gear. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Remove the drive axles from the transmission. Refer to Removal and Installation .

-- Tie the right drive axle up as high as possible.

-- Move the left drive axle to the rear and secure it. Be careful not to damage the surface protection.

-- There may be a small cover plate between the engine and transmission above the right flange shaft. Remove the bolt -arrow - and cover plate -A-.

-- Remove the transmission mount to transmission mount bracket bolts -2-.

-- Remove the transmission mount bracket -A- to transmission bolts -1-.

-- Then, lower the engine/transmission slightly using the spindles so the bracket can be removed.

-- Remove the transmission mount bracket -arrow-.

To remove the transmission, the transmission support 3282 is equipped with the adjustment Plate 3282/42A and installed on the engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.

-- Align the arms of the transmission support so that they match up with the holes in the adjustment Plate 3282/42A.

-- Install the support elements on the adjustment Plate 3282/42A as illustrated.

-- Place the engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A under the vehicle.

The arrow symbol on the adjustment Plate 3282/42A points in the direction of travel.

-- Align the transmission support 3282 so that it is parallel to the transmission.

-- Install the pins3282/29 into the transmission.

-- Secure both support elements to the transmission as illustrated.

NOTE:

Deviating from the illustration of the adjustment plate the front transmission support is illustrated mounted to the transmission -arrow-.

A DSG transmission for All Wheel Drive (AWD) is shown in the illustration. The mounting elements for the Front Wheel Drive (FWD) are identical.

-- Lift the engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A to support the transmission from underneath.

The transmission is disconnected from the engine in this position.

-- Remove all remaining engine/transmission bolts.

-- Separate the transmission from the engine while being careful of selector lever cable and lower the transmission.

Transport the transmission and secure it to the assembly stand. Refer to TRANSMISSION, TRANSPORTING AND SECURING TO ASSEMBLY STAND .
